Alvey Reaches New Career-High In 76-67 Loss At Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Lehigh men's basketball played its second consecutive road game on Saturday afternoon from Hart Center Arena against the Holy Cross Crusaders. A second half comeback propelled the Crusaders to a 76-67 victory on their home court.
"We ended up building a lead, and I was proud of the way our guys stayed the course in the first half," said Murray H. Goodman '48 head coach Brett Reed. "Unfortunately, we weren't shooting as well and didn't get to the line as much as we needed to. They did a good job of driving us and got a lot of points in the paint."
Lehigh (10-15, 6-6 PL) and Holy Cross (9-16, 4-8 PL) have now split the season series after the Mountain Hawks defeated the Crusaders 66-58 in Bethlehem on January 7. The loss snapped a four-game Lehigh win streak in the series entering Saturday's contest. Holy Cross dedicated its court to alumnus and Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Bob Cousy prior to tip-off.
The Mountain Hawks went to sophomore Hank Alvey early, as the big man scored Lehigh's first five points. The two teams traded buckets without any stoppage, playing all the way through the under 12 media timeout. An Edouard Benoit and-one gave the Mountain Hawks a 15-12 lead with 11:41 to play.
Lehigh continued to feed Alvey down low, taking a 22-18 lead off another individual 5-0 run with 5:33 to play. The Crusaders drew even at 22-22 on buckets from Tyler Boston and Aiden Disu before another Disu layup gave the Crusaders a two-point lead with 3:22 to go. Another Alvey bucket and a three from Peter Kramer lifted Lehigh to a 30-29 halftime advantage.
The Mountain Hawks scored seven unanswered to start the second half, capped off by a Nasir Whitlock three that forced a Crusaders timeout. Lehigh extended its lead up to ten off another Alvey layup to lead 41-31, but Holy Cross trimmed their deficit to three on an 11-4 run at the under 12 media timeout.
The Crusaders continued their run out of the break, scoring seven unanswered to lead 49-45 with 9:22 to go. Holy Cross extended its lead to eight on an Aidan Richard and-one just before the under eight media timeout. Lehigh cut into its deficit using buckets from Alvey, Urosevic and Whitlock to set the score at 61-56 with under four minutes to play.
Trailing 66-58 with under two minutes to go, Jalen Vazquez converted an and-one to bring Lehigh within five. On the next possession, Boston knocked down a triple to put Holy Cross back up by eight. The Mountain Hawks pulled back within two but ultimately were forced to foul to extend the game. The Crusaders made their free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Lehigh finished the night shooting 50.0% (29-58) from the floor but only 15.0% (3-20) from three and 60.0% (6-10) from the free throw line. Holy Cross registered splits of 48.1% (26-54) from the field, 41.7% (5-12) from distance, and 82.6% (19-23) from the line. The Crusaders outrebounded the Mountain Hawks 35-29, but Lehigh outscored Holy Cross in the paint 46-38.
After reaching a new career-high of 27 points on Wednesday, Alvey surpassed that mark with 28 points on 13-15 shooting. The sophomore big man added six rebounds and a steal in the loss. Whitlock recorded his first career double-double, notching 18 points, a career-high 10 rebounds, and five assists. Both Joshua Ingram and Vazquez also dished out five assists.
"[Hank] worked really hard to get the ball, and our guys did a good job of getting him the ball as well," said Reed. "[Holy Cross] tried to put speed and quickness on him to see if they could neutralize him, and he was getting double teamed in the second half. Even when he had touches, he was making the right plays."
Disu led the way for Holy Cross, scoring 21 points to go along with nine rebounds. Gabe Warren (20p) and Boston (15p) also scored in double-figures for the Crusaders.
Lehigh returns to Stabler Arena on Wednesday, February 11 at 7 p.m. to take on the American University Eagles.
