Whitlock Reaches 1,000 Career Points In 90-82 Win Over American

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A career-high 33 points from junior captain Nasir Whitlock and a team shooting percentage of 60.0% helped pave the way for a 90-82 Lehigh victory over American University on Wednesday evening at Stabler Arena.

Lehigh (11-15, 7-6 PL) now holds sole possession of third place in the Patriot League standings following the win. American (13-13, 6-7 PL) has now lost its fifth game in a row. Murray H. Goodman '48 head coach Brett Reed won his 298th game, putting him only two away from becoming the second coach in Patriot League history to reach 300 wins.
Despite being short two starters due to injury, the Mountain Hawks came out of the gates firing on all cylinders. Lehigh opened the game shooting 10-11 from the field to jump to a 25-16 lead. The Mountain Hawks found contributions from reserves and starters, including five early points from junior Jake Pike. Whitlock was 6-6 from the field to start the game, hitting a mid-range jumper to set the score at 37-26 with just under five minutes to play.
Coming out of a timeout, Whitlock connected on back-to-back threes to start a perfect 8-8 from the field and extend Lehigh's lead to 17. The Mountain Hawks shot a blistering 62.1% from the filed in the first half and led by as many as 19 before the Eagles scored six unanswered to set the score at 47-34 entering the locker room.
On his first shot attempt of the second half, Whitlock knocked down a triple to put him at 1,001 career points, becoming the 42nd player in Lehigh history to surpass the 1,000 point mark. An Andrew Urosevic triple brought Lehigh's lead back up to 17 with 15:28 to play, but the Eagles scored five unanswered to trim the lead to 12.

Leading by 11, the Mountain Hawks built their lead back up to 17 on buckets from Pike, Whitlock, and two Joshua Ingram free throws with under ten minutes remaining. After AU cut their deficit to 13, an Ingram jumper and Peter Kramer triple brought Lehigh's lead back up to 18.
The Eagles continued to fight down the stretch, hitting consecutive threes to trim Lehigh's advantage to single-digits with 1:25 remaining. AU then forced a turnover and scored a fastbreak bucket to cut the lead to seven at 85-78. After Alvey split a pair at line, AU's Geoff Sprouse drilled a three to trail by five. Despite their best efforts, the Eagles weren't able to complete the comeback as the Mountain Hawks hit their free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Lehigh was lights out offensively, shooting 60.0% (30-50) from the field and 57.1% (12-21) from three while going 18-26 from the free throw line. American posted shooting splits of 42.4% (28-66) from the floor, 33.3% (10-30) from three, and 76.2% (16-21) from the charity stripe. The Mountain Hawks outrebounded the Eagles 30-28.
Whitlock matched his career-high of 33 points, shooting an efficient 12-16 from the field and a perfect 6-6 from three. The junior added three rebounds and two assists and currently sits at 1,010 career points.
Alvey stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Urosevic added 12 points, three rebounds, two assists, and a steal in his first career start. Ingram scored ten points with eight rebounds, six assists, a block, and a steal.
Pike chipped in seven points, three rebounds, an assist, and a block in 18 minutes off the bench. Kramer totaled eight points while Henri Adiassa scored his first basket since November 25.
Sprouse led the Eagles with 21 points while Madden Collins (16p), Julen Iturbe (13p), Matt Mayock (11p) and Greg Jones (10p) also reached double-figures for American.
Lehigh will make the quick trip to Easton to face rival Lafayette on Saturday, February 14 at 5 p.m. from the Kirby Sports Center.
