EASTON, Pa. – Sophomore Hank Alvey and junior Joshua Ingram combined for 42 points to help Lehigh men's basketball defeat rival Lafayette 78-69 at the Kirby Sports Center on Saturday evening. The Mountain Hawks have now won two in a row and sit in third place in the Patriot League standings.
"It was really important for us as a game plan to be able to defend the three-point line," said Murray H. Goodman '48 head coach Brett Reed. "I thought we did that relatively well in the first half, and I thought we did a better job in the second half. We held them to a low number of points per possession, forced them to take a timeout at the second media, and really ended up establishing ourselves."
Lehigh (12-15, 8-6 PL) has now swept the season series against Lafayette (8-19, 5-9 PL) after defeating the Leopards 64-59 at Stabler Arena on January 24. Reed won his 299th game, setting him only one away from becoming the second coach in Patriot League history to reach 300 wins.
Lafayette jumped to an early 7-1 through the first three minutes of action, holding Lehigh to 0-4 shooting. The Mountain Hawks looked towards Alvey early, as the big man gave Lehigh a 15-13 lead off an and-one finish with 10:48 on the clock. The Leopards conducted a 6-0 run to take a 19-15 lead, prompting a Lehigh timeout with 9:33 remaining.
The Leopards extended their lead to eight thanks to four points from Andrew Phillips, but an Edouard Benoit triple and Alvey hook shot trimmed Lafayette's advantage to three. A Nasir Whitlock pull-up jumper and driving layup put the Mountain Hawks back on top by one with 5:40 to go. The junior captain then drilled a three off an Alvey assist to lead 27-23 and force a Lafayette timeout. The Leopards quickly erased their deficit, scoring eight unanswered to go back up by four and hold a 37-33 lead at halftime.
Lafayette opened the second half shooting 4-6 from the field, extending their lead to seven at 46-39. The Mountain Hawks crawled back into the game, eventually tying the contest at 48-48 off an Ingram layup. Andrew Urosevic then drilled back-to-back threes, giving the Mountain Hawks a six-point lead with just under ten minutes to play. The first-year knocked down another out of a timeout to give Lehigh an 11-point advantage with 8:50 to play.
The Mountain Hawks held the Leopards without a field goal for over five minutes of action before Caleb Williams halted a 17-0 Lehigh run. Williams trimmed Lafayette's deficit to seven on a triple with just under six minutes to go. The Leopards continued to rally late, cutting the lead to four on another Williams bucket.
Leading by four with 3:15 to go, the Mountain Hawks came through in the clutch. Alvey, Benoit, and Ingram provided baskets to go on a 9-2 run and take a nine-point lead with 1:30 left in the game. The Mountain Hawks made their free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Lehigh shot the ball very efficiently to the tune of 54.4% (31-57) from the field, 43.8% (7-16) from three while going 9-13 from the free throw line. Lafayette posted shooting splits of 50.0% (25-50) from the floor, 26.3% (5-19) from three, and 73.7% (14-19) from the line. The Mountain Hawks won the battle on the boards 29-28, making Lehigh's record a perfect 7-0 when they outrebound their opponent.
Alvey led the way for Lehigh with 22 points with nine rebounds, four steals, two assists, and a block. The sophomore has now scored 20+ points nine times this season. Ingram was spectacular, scoring 20 points on 9-11 shooting with five assists, a steal, and a rebound.
"[Hank] is active," said Reed. "He plays so hard, he's got great hands. Some of his catches were incredible and his finishes were great. Hank gives us somebody else in addition to the perimeter threats that we have that can convert for us on offense and finish plays on defense."
Whitlock added 15 points, five assists, five rebounds, and two steals. Urosevic put up 11 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Benoit provided seven points and eight rebounds while Peter Kramer chipped in three points.
Williams paced the Leopards with a game-high 26 points and six assists. Phillips (19p) and Ryan Pettit (10p) also scored in double-figures for Lafayette.
The Mountain Hawks will head to Annapolis to take on first-place Navy on Wednesday, February 18 at 7 p.m.
