ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Lehigh men's basketball faced off against the first-place Navy Midshipmen from Alumni Hall on Wednesday evening. A stringent defensive effort pushed the Midshipmen past the Mountain Hawks 72-49.
Navy (22-6, 14-1 PL) has now beaten Lehigh (12-16, 8-7 PL) in both regular season contests this season after a tightly-contested 82-79 double overtime win at Stabler Arena on January 17. The Midshipmen clinched the Patriot League regular season title with the win while the Mountain Hawks still sit in third place in the league standings.
Nasir Whitlock got going for Lehigh early, scoring six of his team's first eight points. The Midshipmen were active defensively to start the game, forcing five Mountain Hawk turnovers in the first eight minutes of action to take a 16-8 lead. Navy extended their lead to as many as 12 before a Whitlock triple brought Lehigh within seven with under five minutes to go in the half. Navy's defense then locked in the rest of the way, holding Lehigh without a field goal to lead 32-20 at half.
Lehigh cut their deficit to single digits in the opening minutes of the second half off a Peter Kramer layup and Whitlock triple. Navy struck right back, using an Austin Benigni triple and two free throws from Donovan Draper to take a 14-point lead. Buckets from Jinwoo Kim and Draper gave the Mids a 16-point advantage at the under 12 media timeout. The Mids continued to add onto their lead out of the break, using an 8-2 run to take a 20-point lead. Navy held the Mountain Hawks to 34.4% from the field in the second half while shooting 50.0% themselves to seal the victory.
Lehigh shot 33.3% (19-57) from the field, 16.7% (3-18) from three, and 80.0% (8-10) from the free throw line. Navy posted shooting splits of 44.3% (27-61) from the floor, 38.9% (7-18) from distance, and 84.6 (11-13) from the line.
Whitlock led the Mountain Hawks offensively with 20 points. Edouard Benoit tallied nine points and a team-high nine rebounds. Hank Alvey posted eight points, eight rebounds, a career-high five assists, two blocks, and a steal.
Benigni paced the Midshipmen with a game-high 25 points to go along with seven assists while Aidan Kehoe put up a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Sunday, February 22 at 12 p.m. to host Boston University in a nationally televised game on CBS Sports Network.
