Lehigh upended 7-0 by tough Rutgers squad

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two days after downing Saint Francis (Pa.) for their first win of 2014, the Lehigh women's tennis team faced a tough test in American Athletic Conference member Rutgers and the visiting Scarlet Knights flexed their muscles with a 7-0 win over the Mountain Hawks Tuesday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Rutgers swept through three doubles matches and six singles matches to win its season opener while dropping the Mountain Hawks to 1-2 on the season.
Lehigh tweaked its doubles lineup slightly, moving junior Abby Farrell back up to No. 1 singles alongside senior Jenai Bilimoria while freshman Cassidy Cruz moved down to the No. 2 team playing with senior Taylor Hampshire. Rutgers swept all three matches, dropping just six combined games. Hampshire and Cruz took three games off Vanessa Petrini and Farris Cunningham in a losing effort.
In singles play, the Scarlet Knights won all six matches in straight sets to complete the shutout. Cruz and classmate Jess Graham both won a team-best five games in their matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles respectively. Senior Jill Sloand, who earned the clinching point Sunday versus Saint Francis, battled Cunningham to a 6-4 first set loss at No. 6 singles before Cunningham took the second set 6-0 at the bottom flight.
The Mountain Hawks will continue their ten match home stand on Saturday when they host Fairleigh Dickinson at 2 p.m. inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
