BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a pair of attempts to play its season opener, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team is set to open its season against Mount St. Mary's on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Mountain Hawks are going for their 14th straight season-opening victory.
Lehigh was supposed to open its season against Wagner, but the game was postponed twice due to winter weather. No makeup date has been determined.
Saturday's game can be viewed live online (for free) through the Patriot League Network. Live stats will also be available.
Lehigh look to return to the Patriot League Tournament for the sixth time in eight seasons. The team returns 18 members from last year and brings in a strong freshmen class of seven. The Mountain Hawks are led by co-captains senior goalie Alexandra Fitzpatrick and junior defender Kelly Scott. Fitzpatrick has started for the Mountain Hawks since her freshman year, posting a 12.66 GAA last season while finishing second in the league with 7.69 saves per game.
The Mountain Hawk attack is led by junior Carli Sukonik, Lehigh's returning leading scorer from a season ago. She was an All-League selection her first two seasons and scored 25 goals in a strong sophomore campaign.
Lehigh returns a strong defensive unit consisting of juniors Lauren Willcox, Kelly Scott and Michelle Abramczyk, who have all started every game since their freshmen years. Willcox earned All-Patriot League honors last season, scooping 20 groundballs while causing 12 turnovers.
Mount St. Mary's is coming off a 17-2 loss to Johns Hopkins in its season opener. Seniors Hannah Gutcher and Lindsay Diaz scored first-half goals to provide the team's offense. The Mountaineers were selected second in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
Lehigh is 4-2 all-time against Mount St. Mary's, which includes three straight victories (in 2008, 2009 and 2010). The Mountain Hawks captured a 16-4 win in 2010, in the last meeting between the two sides. The first-ever meeting came in 2003, an 8-4 Lehigh victory.
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks will host Binghamton on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. before hitting the road next Saturday (Mar. 1) at New Hampshire.
