BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Six members of the Lehigh swimming & diving team will travel to Greensboro, N.C., this week to compete in the 2014 AT&T Winter Nationals, hosted by USA Swimming, which kick off Wednesday night at the Greensboro Aquatics Complex.
Ā
"This is one of the biggest events in USA Swimming for the year," Lehigh head coach Rob Herb said. "Having representation at this event is special, from showcasing the fact that Lehigh swimmers can compete with the best as well as the potential recruiting exposure."
Ā
Sophomores Jacob Moyar, Kevin Huntley and Jamal Willis will represent the Lehigh men. The Mountain Hawks have overcome a slow start to win their last two meets, including a dominant 191-107 decision against archrival Lafayette.
Ā
Moyar will carry the biggest load for the Mountain Hawks this weekend, competing in the 400 yard individual medley, the 200 yard butterfly and the 500 yard freestyle. He has won the 200 IM twice, the 200 fly four times and the 500 free once so far this season and holds the school record in all three events. Huntley has a first and two second place finishes to his credit in the 200 breast, where he also owns the school record. Willis, who will compete in the 50 free, has been one of Lehigh's best swimmers this season, winning the 50 free in all six of Lehigh's meets so far this year. He shares the school record of 20.19 seconds with Demetri Karedis.
Ā
Senior Alissa Leung, junior Courtney Patterson and sophomore Cora Summerfield will represent Lehigh's women at Nationals. The women have been swimming strong this year, posting a 4-2 dual record with their two losses only coming by a combined 52 points.
Ā
Leung will be competing in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events. The school record holder in both events, she has placed first four times in the 100 back and twice in the 200 back so far this season. Patterson will be swimming the 400 IM, one of three events she holds the school record in. She has only competed in the 200 IM this year, but has won that event four times. Summerfield will round out the group with the 200 fly, where she owns a win and a second place finish this season and set the school record at last year's Patriot League Championships.
Ā
This is a primetime event for USA swimming as Olympians and national team members will be taking part in the competition. Coach Herb says this event motivates others on the team to push themselves to they can also take part in that experience.
Ā
"You are shoulder to shoulder with Olympians and national team members, so you can watch what the best are doing and see how you compare," Herb said.
Ā
Lehigh action at Winter Nationals begins Thursday with Moyar swimming the 500 free and Willis competing in the 50 free. On Friday, Moyar and Patterson will swim the 400 IM and Leung will participate in the 100 back. Saturday's final day of competition features the 200 fly with Moyar and Summerfield competing, plus Huntley competes in the 200 breast and Leung swims the 200 back.
Ā
Following Nationals, Lehigh will break for final exams and the holidays. The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Friday January 9 when they host Patriot League rival Army at Jacobs Pool.
