BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's basketball freshman Quinci Mann has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week as the Mountain Hawks prepare to host five-time defending MEAC champion Hampton Tuesday at 11 a.m. on Education Day, supported by Wells Fargo, Spark Orthodontics and Vistacom, inside Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks will welcome over 3,500 students from local elementary and middle schools and give the youngsters an opportunity to enjoy an interactive educational experience by participating in math, geography and art lessons surrounding a NCAA Division I Women's Basketball game.
Mann shot 83.3 percent (5-for-6) from three-point range and 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from the field in Lehigh's two wins last week to help the Mountain Hawks pick up a pair of big road victories. The San Francisco, Calif. native scored in double digits in both of the contests as Lehigh topped Saint Peter's 70-58 Tuesday before beating Sacred Heart 85-77 Sunday. Mann posted 11 points behind a perfect 3-for-3 showing from downtown in Lehigh's come-from-behind victory at Sacred Heart. The guard scored 14 points and pulled down a career-high five rebounds at Saint Peter's. This is Mann's second Rookie of the Week award of the season.
Sophomore Lexi Martins earned honorable mention recognition for the Patriot League Player of the Week award after posting a pair of double-doubles in Lehigh's two wins. The forward is one of just eight players in all of Division I to record five or more double-doubles so far this season. Martins currently leads the Patriot League with an 11.8 rebounds per game average that also ranks 13th in the nation. Her scoring average of 18.4 points per game ranks second in the Patriot League.
Lehigh is already off to its best start in 30 years after securing a 5-0 record for the first time since the 1984-85 season when the Mountain Hawks began 10-0. Tuesday's game will be just the second home game of the season for Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks have secured a 4-0 record away from the friendly confines of Stabler Arena.
Lehigh erased an eight-point halftime deficit and rallied past previously undefeated Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon to capture an 85-77 win in the team's most recent action. Lehigh scored a season-high 85 points and was led by Martins who recorded her fifth double-double in as many games with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Martins converted nine of ten attempts from the free-throw line and 16 of her points came in the second half. Senior Katie O'Reilly chipped in a career-best 18 points behind a 6-for-6 showing from the charity stripe and 5-for-8 effort from the field. Sophomore Kerry Kinek (12) and Mann (11) also scored in double-figures. Kinek led the team with five assists.
The five-time defending MEAC champion Hampton Lady Pirates will be searching for their first win of the season Tuesday. Hampton is 0-4 so far this season, but has faced quality opponents in each game this season. The Lady Pirates dropped a 74-60 decision to Washington State in their most recent action after falling to Kansas State (66-46), Quinnipiac (87-59) and Northwestern (62-36) to open the season.
Hampton led for much of the first half against Washington State, but the Cougars were able to grab a six-point halftime lead and never look back. Sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led the Lady Pirates with 20 points, hitting three of her six 3-pointers, while senior guard Kenia Cole added 13 points and a career-high eight assists.
Tate-DeFreitas leads the team with an average of 20.8 points per game. The next highest scoring Lady Pirates are Cole and Jackie Marshall who average 5.8 tallie per contest. Tyler Hobgood leads the team with 7.8 points per game. As a team, the Lady Pirates average 50.2 points per game compared to their opponents' 72.2.
Tuesday's game is the first meeting between Lehigh and Hampton. It's Lehigh's first contest against a MEAC school since Nov. 28, 2010 when the Mountain Hawks beat Howard 56-29. Lehigh is 2-2 all-time against current members of the MEAC. Lehigh picked up wins over Howard and Morgan State, but has lost two games to UMES.
