BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh once again heads west across Pennsylvania to face a ranked in-state opponent as the 15th-ranked Mountain Hawks meet No. 11 Pittsburgh Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House. The Mountain Hawks opened their season winning eight straight bouts in a 27-9 triumph over Hofstra last Thursday but are looking to bounce back from a 24-10 loss at four-time defending national champion Penn State. Junior Nathaniel Brown and freshman Dylan Milonas were the two Mountain Hawks to get through last weekend unscathed, with Brown officially returning from his deferred year with a pair of bonus wins.
Â
Three Mountain Hawks are ranked in the latest rankings by The Open Mat, with juniors Mason Beckman and Nathaniel Brown both ranked in the top ten at their respective weight classes. Sophomore Elliot Riddick joins Beckman and Brown in the rankings by The Open Mat, InterMat and W.I.N. Magazine, but has yet to crack FloWrestling's rankings.
Â
Lehigh has just two fifth-year seniors on its roster, with both wrestlers newcomers to the Lehigh program. Santiago Martinez comes to Lehigh after competing for Central Florida in the National Club Wrestling Association. He was a three time NCWA national finalist for UCF, winning back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014. Marshall Peppelman joined the Mountain Hawks this fall after four years at Cornell. Peppelman went 56-34 between 2010-2013 for the Big Red and was a two-time EIWA place winner and a NCAA qualifier in 2012. Both men are enrolled in Lehigh's Educational Leadership graduate program and both went 1-1 last weekend with wins versus Hofstra and losses against Penn State.
Â
Pittsburgh is off to a strong 3-0 start this season with wins over Bloomsburg, Edinboro and Bucknell to move from No. 14 in the preseason coaches poll to No. 11 in the current rankings. Last weekend the Panthers picked up a road win over the tenth-ranked Fighting Scots before returning home to defeat Bucknell 22-11 last Saturday.
Â
Pittsburgh's strength is in its upper weights, where the Panthers feature fifth-ranked Max Thomusseit at 184 and seventh-ranked Nick Bonaccorsi at 197. Senior Tyler Wilps won an ACC title and earned All-America honors with a seventh-place finish at last year's NCAA Tournament, but Wilps has not competed yet this season for the Panthers. Lehigh Valley native Mikey Racciato (Pen Argyl) is the third Panther ranked in the Open Mat's latest rankings, coming in at No. 14 at 149. Pittsburgh finished second in the ACC and 22nd at NCAAs following a 13-3 dual campaign.
Â
Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro wrestled for the Panthers from 1985-1989, under the guidance of Rande Stottlemyer, who retired following the 2012-13 season. Pittsburgh's only four-time All-American, Santoro amassed a 167-13 record in four seasons for the Panthers, and won national titles at 142 in 1988 and 1989. A three-time EWL Champion, Santoro is also the Panthers' career leader with 43 falls and posted an incredible 97-3 record over his final two seasons. Pittsburgh assistant coach Drew Headlee returned to his alma mater this summer after two seasons as Lehigh's volunteer assistant coach.
Â
Lehigh and Pittsburgh will meet for the 60th time with the Mountain Hawks holding a 40-17-2 advantage. The Mountain Hawks have won 14 of the last 17 duals against the Panthers and have won the last eight duals in Pittsburgh. Pat Santoro is 4-2 versus his alma mater.
Â
Saturday's match gets underway at 7 p.m. from Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh. At this time there is no broadcast coverage planned by either institution. Match-by-match updates will be available via Twitter by following @LehighWrestling.
