Lehigh rowing kicks off fall season on Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team will begin fall action this weekend when the Mountain Hawks head to the Bucknell Invitational on Sunday (10 a.m.). Lehigh will face Drexel and the host Bison at the Shamokin Dam on the Susquehanna River.
Â
The Mountain Hawks have been hard at work since arriving to campus for the fall semester.
Â
"We've had a strong showing from the team, returning in better shape than we've seen in the past," said head coach Brian Conley. "We do have some injuries that we're working through, but overall, the team has started to improve its fitness and ability to make a uniform motion on the water."
Â
Lehigh enjoyed success last season as the women finished ahead of Colgate and Loyola at the Patriot League Championships while three crews advanced to the semifinals of the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta, highlighted by the Men's Varsity Eight reaching the Petite Finals. The focus this fall is building the foundation for the spring season ahead.
"The fall season is simply to gain some race experience and drastically improve our base fitness, so when we go into our winter training season, we know how fast our competition currently is and how much faster we need to be when the spring rolls around," said Conley. "We are also working to bring the new freshmen along in terms of learning the Lehigh rowing methods as we welcome them onto the team with open arms."
Â
Following Sunday's competition, the Mountain Hawks have two other fall events on tap. They'll compete in Navy Day next weekend and the Rutgers Fall Classic on Nov. 8.Â
"It's hard to predict who will be fast in the spring based off the fall season because coaches take different approaches," said Conley. "We've always had a developmental approach to the fall and really try to advance our understanding of the sport and our boat movement skills. The fall racing also lets us see competition that we normally may not see in the spring depending on the races that we attend."
Â
The overall excitement around the Mountain Hawks' program continues to rise.
Â
"This is an especially exciting and fun weekend," said Conley. "It's not only the first time we'll be racing this year, but also the other part that makes it exciting is the race logistics. All the crews are sent off in a staggered start at the same time. So freshmen will not only be racing other freshmen boats, but they'll also get to see the speed of the varsity boats as well.
Â
Freshmen will have approximately a 300-meter staggered lead at the beginning of the four-mile race course.Â
Â
"This will allow for some good racing and possible passing of crews through the race course, which all happened at the bridge halfway through the race last year," said Conley.
