LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team began the fall season on Sunday with a solid all-around effort at the Bucknell Invitational. Facing Drexel and the host Bison, the Mountain Hawks gained tremendous experience against two of the best crews in the region.
Â
"The effort today was really good," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We definitely put forth a powerful effort. We definitely have some work to do in terms of the technical side of our rowing and getting miles under our belt, which this race really helped with."
Â
Sunday's racing consisted of all crews of eight. All women's racing began first while the men began minutes later. Lehigh's third and fourth crews (men's only) were freshmen boat.
Â
"We always love going out and racing two of the top teams we'll see all year right out of the gate because that allows us to learn more about where we stand," said Conley. "Drexel and Bucknell showed they're going to be fast again this year and we'll need to find some speed."
Â
On the women's side, Lehigh's first boat finished in 23:44 followed by the second in 23:57 and third in 24:10. For the men, the Mountain Hawks' fourth boat (consisting of freshmen) was first to finish at 20:04 while the three other crews were not far behind.
Â
Lehigh will return to action next weekend when the Mountain Hawks compete in Navy Day next Saturday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
