Mountain Hawks wrap up successful effort at Navy Day

PHILADELPHIA - The Lehigh rowing team wrapped up a successful Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River as the Mountain Hawks competed in seven different events, finishing fourth in the Women's Freshmen Four and 10th in two other races on a cool and damp Saturday. After four weeks off, Lehigh will return to action on Nov. 8 at the Rutgers Fall Classic.
Â
"We had mixed results today," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "The varsity boats held some changes that we've been working on through the week, but it's clear that we have a lot of work to do over the winter to gain a lot more speed. The freshmen boats showed a lot of speed today, which we were excited to see. I think the fall is going according to plan; we're developing a whole team rather than developing one particular boat."
The Men's Varsity Four began the day just after 9 a.m. as the Mountain Hawks placed their three crews in 10th (15:19.55), 18th (15:43.44) and 21st (16:06.04). Â Lehigh's Women's Varsity Four finished in 19th (18:18.33). Men's Varsity Eight finished 19th (13:50.07) and 23rd (14:10.80), respectively while the Women's Varsity Eight placed 13th (15:23.79).
"Racing at a bigger regatta, you see more competition," said Conley. "Therefore, it forces the athletes to learn exactly what they need to do. They got to see other teams and how they prepare for racing. Being able to see that will help them later on, too."

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Nov. 8 when they compete in the Rutgers Fall Classic on the Raritan River.
"The way our schedule is set up with two races early on then a later race against stronger competition," said Conley. "That break of four weeks will really allow us to evaluate what we need to work on, allow us to race again at a higher level against stronger competition and allow us to push the envelope even more."
