Lehigh wraps up fall with strong effort at Rutgers Fall Classic

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Lehigh rowing team wrapped up its fall season on Saturday with a strong effort at the Rutgers Fall Classic on the Raritan River. The Women's Freshmen Eight won its race to lead the way. The Lehigh women faced just Rutgers while the men rowed against Navy, Penn, Bucknell, Georgetown and the host Scarlet Knights. The freshmen rowed in eights while the varsity rowed in fours on Saturday.

"I thought the overall effort from the team was good," said head coach Brian Conley. "I think the freshmen were definitely the standouts for the day, with the freshmen women winning their event and the freshmen men being competitive with some high-class team. The varsity women put out an effort which was expected in terms of results, but showed they have some speed to find. The varsity men struggled to find their rhythm, which affected them later on."

The Women's Freshmen Eight finished its race in 18:48 to lead the way, more than one minute ahead of Rutgers (19:58). Lehigh's Women's Varsity Four placed its crews in fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

The Men's Freshmen Eight enjoyed a strong performance, finishing fifth out of eight crews. Lehigh's "B" crew was first to finish, finishing in 15:38.

"I think it's great to race crews that are historically faster than us to really understand the level of speed that we personally can obtain," said Conley. "We took a step in that direction as a team and showed we can compete against historically faster teams than us."

Saturday's race featured a unique setup, which should help prepare the team for ever-changing conditions.

"We always talk about being dynamic amongst the team," said Conley. "You have to be ever-changing with the rhythm of the boat, the conditions and everything that's surrounding you. The crews that are able to adapt the most end up with the best results overall. That comes from skill learned over time."

The Mountain Hawks will now transition into their winter season as they prepare for their spring schedule.
