BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After a long winter season, the Lehigh rowing team will hit the water for its first spring race on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks face Temple and Delaware on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Lehigh looks to take momentum from a strong fall and winter into its spring season. Racing begins at 8:30 a.m.

Improvement, and not necessarily tangible results, is the focus of Lehigh Rowing at the beginning of the school year.

"Through the fall, we had a lot of focus on improvement and development in all the boats," said head coach Brian Conley. "We rowed mixed lineups in the fall, so we knew our results were not going to be where we wanted them to be. We put a lot of focus on mental toughness and conditioning through the winter. Both the men and women did a fantastic job of coming back in January and hitting the ergs and weights hard to set them up for what we're hoping is a very successful spring season."

Amidst a long season that begins when classes start in the fall and runs through the end of classes in the spring, focus is of utmost importance. One of the biggest strengths of this team is its leadership.

"Our leaders have done a fantastic job over the course of the winter to keep things in focus of where we need to be," said Conley. "The athletes overall are more mentally tough than we've ever been. We may not necessarily have greater speed than we did last year in terms of numbers, but what will translate to boat speed is greater this year because of that mental toughness."

The extreme winter, especially the cold, forced the team to be inside longer than it would have liked. Conley's focus is getting the crews up to speed.

"Because of the winter, being on the machines a lot longer than normal, we're a little bit behind in terms of where we normally would be with getting on the water," said Conley. "That's where our focus is going to be from now until the end of the season."

The spring schedule begins with two local programs, Temple and Delaware.

"It's definitely going to be a test of what we can do because we know both these teams have gotten faster, as well as us, in the last year," said Conley. "We've set up our schedule so that it progressively gets more difficult as the season progresses, so when we're at our championships, we are primed and ready to go."

The team has set some concrete goals, but the most important thing is to focus on the process, which isn't always easy.

"We definitely have set goals and those goals are to have ourselves on the medal stands at our championship races, but the difference with this group is they put more emphasis on the process than necessarily the end result," said Conley. "We've done that both at the macro level and the micro level, even within a boat - how we're taking a stroke all the way down to how we're racing on a daily basis."

The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday (Mar. 28) when they compete in the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River.
