Mountain Hawks to wrap up fall season Saturday at Rutgers Fall Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After almost one month since its last fall race, the Lehigh rowing team heads to the Raritan River for the Rutgers Fall Classic on Saturday. The races will begin at 12 p.m. with the women facing the host Scarlet Knights while the men face Navy, Georgetown, Penn, Bucknell and Rutgers. The Mountain Hawks last hit the water for competition at Navy Day on Oct. 11, but they've been continuing to get better in practice over the last few weeks.

"We have changed things up over the last few weeks and have really seen the team put in great practices more consistently than before," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "I am hoping this focus and effort will show on the water this coming weekend with some boat speed we haven't seen before."

Last time out, Lehigh competed in seven different events, finishing fourth in the Women's Freshman Four and 10th in two other races as the Mountain Hawks faced a strong group of teams from the region.

Conley sees values in a long layoff between the team's second and third fall races.

"I think having some time in the fall season between races really allows us to take a step back and see what we have to improve upon before we have to get back out and race again," he said. "It has definitely allowed some of the younger athletes to develop a little more than they would have if they were forced to race every weekend in the fall."

Saturday's race features a different setup, which only helps the crews and forces them to adjust and adapt to their surroundings, which they'll have to do from race-to-race (and even mid-race) in the spring.

"This race is a little different from our previous races in that the varsity will be racing in fours and the overall winner is determined by the combined times of the top two finishing crews from each team," said Conley. "This puts a lot more pressure on the entire team to compete where you can't just have one boat perform. It really makes everyone have to buy into being successful."

Saturday marks the end of the fall season for the Mountain Hawks as they will transition into winter training. The team hopes to end the fall on a high note and take that momentum into the winter, and spring.

"Our most important focus for this coming weekend is to make sure we're pushing our boats faster than we were four weeks ago at Navy Day," said Conley. "Our next goal is to keep the focus within our boats. It is very easy to look at other boats when racing and we've had great focus in practice, now we have to put it into action in racing."
