The Rivalry: Lehigh vs. Lafayette

GLADSTONE, N.J. – Lehigh and Lafayette got together for their annual President's Cup matches Tuesday at Hamilton Farm Golf Club. Last year, Lehigh put forth a dominant performance to reclaim the cup but on Tuesday the Leopards prevailed in a tight matchup 8.5-7.5.

The day-long event featured a Ryder Cup-style match play format. Play began in the morning with four better ball nine-hole doubles matches followed by four alternate shot nine-hole doubles matches. The afternoon session matched eight Mountain Hawks against eight Leopards in singles match play.

All three sessions were closely contested but in the end, Lafayette's 2.5-1.5 advantage in the opening better ball matches proved to be the difference.

In the better ball session, senior Carlos Kim and junior Dave Olexson opened with a 2 and 1 win over Art Griffin in James Frahm, but Lafayette claimed the next two matches as Phil Rosengarded and Kirk Massie downed freshman Billy Johns and sophomore Brendan Worthy 1-up and Bob Dyer and Mike Zausmer claimed a 2-1 win over seniors Zach Allinson and Jack Russell. The final match of the session, matching juniors Harley Abrams and Johnny Heydt from Lehigh against Jared Mactas and Pat Luther, was halved.

In alternate shot play, Griffin and Frahm reversed their initial result with a win over Kim and Olexson, while Rosengarden and Massie downed Johns and Worthy. Lehigh earned two points as Allinson and Russell avenged their better ball loss and Abrams and Heydt posted a 2 and 1 win over Mactas and Luther.

Needed a big performance in singles play to retain the cup, the Mountain Hawks could only muster a 4-4 split. Lehigh won three of the first four matches, with Kim downing Griffin 2 and 1, Johns winning 1 up over Massie and Worthy beating Rosengarden 3 and 2. Russell posted Lehigh's fourth win of singles play, taking down Dyer 2 and 2 but Mactas and Luther won singles matches over Abrams and Heydt to reclaim the cup.

The President's Cup has now alternated possession in all four years of its existence, with Lehigh winning in 2011 and 2013 and Lafayette prevailing in 2012 and 2014.

The Mountain Hawks will close out their fall season this weekend when they host the Lehigh Invitational Saturday and Sunday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.
