BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's swimming and diving team battled hard against Patriot League power Bucknell on Saturday but the Bison held off the Mountain Hawks 172-122 at Jacobs Pool. Senior Stephanie Yaszemski was honored prior to the meet but it was freshman Kaitlyn Ruffing, who won two individual events and was part of two winning relay teams, who led the Mountain Hawks against the Bison.
Â
"It was a great effort on senior day as the men and women both kept pace with a Patriot League powerhouse throughout the entire meet," said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. "We swam with grit in every race. We may not have won every race but we never gave up a race. I'm very proud of the effort."
Â
Ruffing set a new Jacobs Pool record in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 52.23 seconds, edging teammate Carolyn Koch for the win. The freshman from Murrysville, Pa. also won the 50 free in 23.80 seconds with Koch finishing second.
Â
Sophomore Courtney Patterson posted Lehigh's other individual event win as she led a sweep in the 200 free with a time of 1:54.57. Freshman Kelly Carroll finished second to Patterson, while Koch took third.
Â
Lehigh also won both relays, with juniors Alissa Leung, Kimberly Weyand and Mary Samuels teaming with Ruffing to win the 200 medley relay in 1:54.24 and Ruffing joining Carroll, Patterson and Koch to capture the 400 free relay in 3:32.79.
Â
Take out the diving results, where Bucknell held a 32-0 advantage, and Lehigh trailed the Bison in swimming events by just 18 points on the day.
Â
Of the nine swimming events won by the Bison, Lehigh swimmers battled to finish second in eight of them. Leung and Weyand finished second in both backstroke and breaststroke events respectively, while Patterson, Carroll and freshman Cora Summerfield also added runner up finishes.
Â
Lehigh is now 6-2 in dual meets this season while the Bison women moved to 8-1.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will split their squad next weekend for the final competition of the regular season. Some Mountain Hawks will take part in the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., while others will compete in a dual meet at Drexel.
