BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's cross country team captured its second Lehigh Invitational in three years on Saturday morning at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. Lehigh placed five runners inside the top ten as senior Rosie Roessel led the way for the Mountain Hawks finishing in fourth with a time of 22:54.23.
"I'm very proud of my first year runners, and I'm very proud of my veterans," said Head Coach Debbie Utesch. "Coming into the meet this weekend, I really didn't know what it was going to look like. We had a few people that didn't run today that are normally top contributors for us. I was interested to see who would step up and I was very happy with the result."
Roessel joined the cross country team this year after a four year position on Lehigh's softball team. Her time was only nine seconds behind first-place finisher Rose Willey (22:45.67) of Lafayette.
"This was my first-ever 6k," said Roessel. "I knew whatever I did was going to be a personal best, so I had nothing to lose and no one was really expecting anything out of me. I was hoping to surprise some people."
Mountain Hawk freshman Anne Birkenmaier impressed in her first collegiate race with a time of 23:28.48, which put her in sixth place. Senior Katherine Howley (23:32.00) followed in seventh place. Senior Marissa Galante (23:35.95) and sophomore Carlie Skellington (23:39.34) took home eighth and ninth place, respectively. The Mountain Hawks also saw impressive performances from sophomore Elizabeth Weiler who finished in 15th, and freshman Ashley Strysko in 20th.
Lehigh finished with 34 points, which was 32 points ahead of second place finisher LaSalle. Patriot League foe Lafayette came in third with 97 points. West Virginia, Saint Francis (Pa.), Muhlenberg, Moravian, Temple, DeSales and Grove City rounded out the top ten.
Next up for the Mountain Hawks will be a trip to the Lafayette Dual Meet, which is slated to take place on September 21.
