BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team began preseason practice on Wednesday in preparation for the 2013 season. The squad will look to improve on 2012's four-win season under the leadership of head coach Dean Koski, who will enter his 22nd year at Lehigh.
"Preseason is just an awesome experience of bringing the team together," said Koski. "I'm excited to see the upperclassmen come back. It's always great to welcome the freshmen and see how overwhelmed they are in this experience, but how much they grow in these two weeks."
The Mountain Hawks will be led by senior captains James Meyerkord and Ben Wysocki. With the help of three other returning seniors, the captains will aim to lead the team to its fourth Patriot League tournament in the last five years. The Mountain Hawks also return five juniors, eight sophomores, and will welcome nine freshmen.
"A lot of guys came in fit, got stronger and put on some weight," said Wysocki. "Everyone is really competing for some positions, so I think it's going to make preseason really competitive."
Lehigh finished the 2012 season with a 4-12-1 record. The strong Mountain Hawk defense only allowed an average of 1.47 goals per game, and posted three shutouts on the season. Despite the low win total, Lehigh remained in contention for a postseason berth into its final game of the season. Lehigh will open this season at home on Friday August 31 at 7 p.m. against Bryant.
"Our intentions are to make sure we come out and take care of things we're capable of doing on the defensive side of the ball and get really good at that," said Koski. "We want to get the guys fit, get the guys evaluated, make sure that they're healthy and that we grow as a team. If we can do those things then I'm excited about starting off our season."
