BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Seniors James Meyerkord and Ben Wysocki have been named Lehigh men's soccer captains for the 2013 season, as announced by head coach Dean Koski on Friday. The duo has impressed in their time at Lehigh, both on and off the field, and will look to lead the Mountain Hawks to the Patriot League Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years.
The duo was elected as captains at the end of the spring season.
"I couldn't be happier with their selection, by the team and the coaching staff," said Koski. "They're two young men who I feel can lead this program, on and off the field. They're conscientious students, they're dedicated athletes and they're really good teammates. I've watched them mature over the years to emerge as leaders of this program."
Meyerkord has played in 51 games in his career, starting 39. Last season, the Missouri native played in all 17 games (starting 15) while posting two goals and an assist. The goals came at crucial times; his first was the game's only goal in a 1-0 win over Yale while he tied the score in the second half at #1 Maryland. Meyerkord has four goals and four assists in his career.
Wysocki finished with a goal and two assists last season, and had a hand in both Lehigh goals in the regular season finale at Army when the Mountain Hawks were fighting for their postseason lives. That earned him Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors, two years after winning the same award for his game-winner at Army to clinch a Patriot League Tournament spot his freshman year. Wysocki has two goals and seven assists in 47 career games and 18 starts.
"We have many players in this program who can step up and lead as well," said Koski. "Jimmy and Ben will be supported by their own classmates, who will also lead in different ways."
