Mountain Hawks fall to American, 16-8

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh fought back from an early 3-0 deficit to pull even at four, but American responded with a 5-0 run to end the half and rode the momentum in the second as the Mountain Hawks dropped a 16-8 final on Sunday. Senior Julie McBrien scored five of Lehigh's goals, including the first four.
Sunday was Lehigh's Pink Game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness as the Mountain Hawks wore special pink uniforms. Several alumnae also returned for the game, including many from Lehigh's 1985 East Coast Conference Championship team.

“I think American was a deserving team today for the win,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. “They really worked hard for all 60 minutes and I think we played hard for periods of the game, but we were unable to match their execution and emotion over all 60 minutes.”
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead just 2:19 into the game, but McBrien answered with a natural hat trick, scoring at 26:19, 20:02 and 18:39 to tie the score at three. Emily Maher made it 4-3 just 11 seconds later, but McBrien again had an answer, this time off a free position shot.
However, American scored the final five goals of the first half and four of the first five second-half tallies, to take a 13-5 advantage with 22:46 remaining. The teams each scored three times the rest of the way. McBrien scored her fifth at the 4:31 mark while junior Julie Tatios rounded out the scoring with her first of the season at 1:36.
Freshman Megan Paytas also scored to up her point total to 17 points (nine goals, eight assists). Lehigh held a 26-25 edge in shots and 15-11 in groundballs while the Eagles had 17 draw controls to Lehigh's nine. American goalie Teal Harrison was strong in making 13 saves. Junior Alexandra Fitzpatrick made six for Lehigh before being relieved by senior MaryLeah DiNisco who stopped two-of-four sent her way.
The Mountain Hawks will have a quick turnaround as they hit the road for University Park, Pa. for a midweek matchup against #7/8 Penn State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
