BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Riding two straight wins, the #18/19 Lehigh men's lacrosse team remains home to host Colgate on Saturday. Opening faceoff is set for 11 a.m. in Goodman Stadium, Lehigh's first game in its football stadium since hosting North Carolina in April of 2011. The rematch of last season's Patriot League Championship Game will air live nationally on CBS Sports Network.
The game is part of the Summit Series, Presented by Johnny's Bagels, with tickets just five dollars for the public, and free for those with a Lehigh ID. A number of promotions surround the game as Johnny's Bagels gift cards will be given away to lucky fans during the game, Lehigh's Relay for Life will be on hand generating awareness for its upcoming events and Chipotle promotions will take place during the game. Goodman Stadium opens one hour prior to faceoff at 10 a.m.
Standing at 3-0 in league play for a second straight season, the Mountain Hawks look to start 4-0 for the first time since 1999. With wins in each of its next two weeks (vs. Colgate and at Bucknell), Lehigh would earn the regular season championship and #1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament later this month. With a win Saturday, Lehigh would clinch a Patriot League Tournament berth for a third straight season.
Last season, Lehigh avenged a regular season loss at Colgate by beating the Raiders in the title game, 16-14. The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead before holding off a big Colgate surge. The Raiders scored five of six goals in a second-quarter run to pull within one (6-5), but that's as close as they would get. Brian Hess, David DiMaria and Dante Fantoni all posted hat tricks to lead the offense.
Saturday will mark Lehigh's first game in Goodman Stadium since April of 2011 when it hosted North Carolina. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a convincing 12-7 win over Navy last Saturday, their third straight win over the Midshipmen after going 87 years between victories. Lehigh jumped out to a 6-1 lead early in the second quarter. Five first-quarter goals came from five different goal scorers (seniors Alex Drake, Noah Molnar, Ryan Snyder, Hess and sophomore Dan Taylor). Taylor went on to score twice more (and add an assist) for his third-career hat trick.
Freshman Tripp Telesco continued his strong play on the defensive end, posting career highs in groundballs (5) and caused turnovers (3) to earn his second straight Patriot League Rookie of the Week award. The Mountain Hawks held Navy scoreless for long stretches of 15:47, (bridging the first and second quarters) and 21:00 (bridging the second and third quarters). Sophomore Matt Poillon impressed again between the pipes, making six saves while allowing seven goals or fewer for a fourth straight game.
Colgate enters with a 7-3 record, in the midst of an up-and-down season. The Raiders began the season 3-0, but lost two straight (to Cornell and Hobart), responding with four straight before dropping a 10-4 final to Army on Easter Sunday. Reigning Tewaaraton Award Winner Peter Baum owns a team-leading 26 goals, 11 assists and 37 points while Ryan Walsh is right behind with 25 goals, eight assists and 33 points. Jimmy Ryan has 19 points, Matt Clarkson 18 and Brendan McCann 17. Robert Grabher stands at 52 percent from the faceoff X with a team-high 72 groundballs. Conor Murphy has seen the majority of time in goal, owning a 7.58 GAA and 54.5 save percentage.
The Raiders own a 27-11 lead in the all-time series, but won the most recent matchup in last season's Patriot League Championship Game. That snapped a seven-game Colgate winning streak and marked Lehigh's first win over the Raiders since 2005. The sides first met in 1956, a Colgate victory. Lehigh's first win came in 1960 by an 8-6 final. Lehigh's most success came via a four-game winning streak from 1992-95.
Following Saturday's game, Lehigh will head to Bucknell for a big matchup against the #11/13 Bison on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
