Lehigh falls to Delaware, 17-7

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Delaware Blue Hens took down the Lehigh women's lacrosse team 17-7 Tuesday at Ulrich Sports Complex. A slow start on defense hurt the Mountain Hawks, as Delaware ripped off five goals in the first eight minutes of the contest. Lehigh answered with three straight, but couldn't pull any closer.
“When the opponent has all the ball control and possession, we didn't get enough stops on defense to turn that momentum around,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern.
Lehigh came back with three scores of its own, but after trailing 7-4 at halftime, the Blue Hens took control of the contest by scoring the first five goals of the second half. The Mountain Hawks fall to 2-2 with the loss while Delaware improves to 3-2.
A free position shot from Bridget Burns put the Blue Hens on the scoreboard and began Delaware's run that included three unassisted goals. Sophomore Carli Sukonik kick started the Mountain Hawks' run of three goals in fewer than seven minutes, which was continued by senior Julie McBrien's 10th goal of the season and a shot fired home by sophomore Kelsey Yenco. An unassisted score from Allison Hahn gave her a hat trick and put the Blue Hens up 6-3. Shannon Burns scored to make it 7-3 before Lehigh freshman Kendall Garden fired a shot past Blue Hens goalie Alex Zaugra to cut the Lehigh deficit to 7-4 at the half.
Delaware's offense erupted once again at the start of the second half. Five different Delaware players scored goals to open the second half. Freshman Kris Abens stopped the run with her first goal of the day, with 21:56 left in the game. The Blue Hens scored two more before Garden netted her second of the game on a free position shot. Following two more Blue Hen tallies, Abens netted Lehigh's final goal of the game with an assist from Garden.
Garden led Lehigh with three points (two goals, one assist), while Abens scored two goals. Delaware's Chelsea Fay led all scorers with five goals while Bridget Burns and Hahn chipped in with four goals apiece for the Blue Hens. The Mountain Hawks committed fewer turnovers, 11 to the Blue Hens' 13 but won just six of 25 draw controls, including just one of 12 in the second half. Zaugra made five saves between the pipes for Delaware. Junior Alexandra Fitzpatrick made five saves for Lehigh while senior MaryLeah DiNisco came in for the 25:25 and made four.
The Mountain Hawks will hit the road for their next two games, beginning Saturday when they open Patriot League play at Navy. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. Lehigh will then face No. 2 Florida on Tuesday March 12 before returning home to face Colgate on March 16.
