Mountain Hawks drop Patriot League opener at Navy

3/10/2013 3:03:00 AM | Women's Lacrosse

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-4 final in its Patriot League opener Saturday against defending league champion Navy. Sophomore Carli Sukonik scored two of the Mountain Hawks' goals while junior Alexandra Fitzpatrick made 11 saves between the pipes. Lehigh will now head to #2 Florida on Tuesday before returning home to host Colgate in a Patriot League clash next Saturday.

“Navy is a tough and experienced team,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. “We spent a large portion of the game on defense. We committed a large number of unforced turnovers which was a criticial difference in the game. We gained valuable experience today.”

Senior Julie McBrien scored a goal while adding four groundballs and a draw control. Sophomore Kelsey Yenco tallied Lehigh's other goal.
Navy jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Sukonik scored her first of the day at 16:30 of the first half. She added another less than 10 minutes later, but the Midshipmen took a 7-2 advantage at the half.

The lead extended to 11-2 in the second before Yenco scored at 21:51. McBrien scored on a free position shot with 3:32 left in the game.

Navy held a 33-11 edge in shots while groundballs were tied at 17 and the Mids held a 14-6 edge in draw controls. Three Navy goalies combined for five saves across Fitzpatrick's 11.

Lehigh will face the #2 Florida Gators on Tuesday in Gainesville, Fla. before returning to Ulrich Sports Complex for a contest against Colgate on March 16.
