BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The #18 Lehigh men's lacrosse team returns home to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday to host Navy, looking to improve to 3-0 in Patriot League play. Opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a hard-fought 8-5 win at a much-improved Holy Cross team last Saturday. Lehigh plays three of its final four regular season games at home.
Saturday's game is the second of four Summit Series event presented by Johnny's Bagels. Admission is five dollars and free with a Lehigh ID.
The Mountain Hawks are looking to beat Navy for a third straight time after winning only once in the first 30 head-to-head meetings. Lehigh bounced back from a tough 6-4 loss to UMass by beating Holy Cross 8-5 on Saturday. Senior David DiMaria led the way with three goals while classmate Brian Hess added two for his second multi-goal effort in as many Patriot League contests. Seniors DiMaria and Dante Fantoni enter Saturday close to significant milestones; DiMaria is three assists from 100 in his career while Fantoni is two goals from 100.
Tripp Telesco continued his strong freshman season, posting three groundballs and a caused turnover while holding Holy Cross leading scorer Clay Haarmann to a single goal. Telesco earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week for that effort, combined with a strong performance against UMass. He became Lehigh's first Rookie honoree since Matt Poillon won the award twice last year. Poillon continued his strong play, allowing just five goals - his third straight game allowing six goals or fewer.
DiMaria owns a team-leading 40 points this season, leading the team in goals (20) and assists (20) as well. He's eclipsed 40 points in three straight seasons and is on pace to near (or surpass) his career high of 52 points as a sophomore. That was the year Lehigh beat Navy for the first time since 1913, propelling the Mountain Hawks to their first Patriot League Tournament appearance since 2006. Lehigh followed that up with a historic 14-3 campaign. Last year, the Mountain Hawks held the Mids scoreless for the final 40:02, scoring eight unanswered goals for a 9-4 win.
Lehigh is looking to begin 3-0 in Patriot League play for a second straight season. With a win, the Mountain Hawks would remain in (at worst) a first-place tie and could be in sole possession of first place if Bucknell falls to Holy Cross.
Navy is 3-6 on the season, beating VMI and Detroit to start the season while earning a Patriot League victory over Lafayette. The Midshipmen have lost three straight, falling to Towson, Holy Cross and Colgate. Sam Jones leads the team in points with 21 (13 goals, eight assists), Gabe Voumard has 16 (12 goals, four assists) and Tucker Hull 15 (nine goals, six assists). Pat Kiernan leads the defense with a team-leading 57 groundballs and 23 caused turnovers. Five Midshipmen have taken a faceoff, led by Evan McGoogan who is 53 percent (53-of-100). Nolan Hickey has started all nine games in goal, owning a 9.11 GAA and 55.7 save percentage.
Navy leads the all-time series, 29-3, but the Mountain Hawks have won two straight. Lehigh ended a 98-year drought with a 14-10 win in 2011 and followed with an impressive 9-4 road win a season ago. Navy won the first meeting in 1910 (4-2) and won three straight before Lehigh's first win in 1913 (4-3). From there, the Mids won 26 straight, but the Mountain Hawks have responded the last two seasons.
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday when they host Colgate at Goodman Stadium on CBS Sports Network in a rematch of the 2012 Patriot League Championship Game.
