PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team opened its outdoor season at the Philadelphia College Classic on Saturday with the throwers registering top finishes. Many of Lehigh's competitors at the event were not able to use the indoor season to practice for their events.
“We were able to get our feet wet and get a good look of what we have for the future,” Lehigh head coach Matt Utesch said.
Senior Melissa Romero had the team's highest finish in the javelin with a hurl of 38.50 meters. Freshman Adriana Vukmanic (34.23 meters), sophomore Carly Deskins (32.92 meters) and sophomore Natalie Bates (30.01 meters) also competed in the event for Lehigh.
Bates was a top finisher in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:07.86. Sophomore Babette Hohrath, sophomore Taryn Schmelzinger and junior Victoria Olivia followed with times of 1:10.94, 1:12.86 and 1:15.34 respectively. The Brown and White had a trio of competitors in the 800-meter run, as sophomore Victoria Mullane, freshman Ann O'Connell and senior Samantha Andersen finished in ninth, 12th and 15th place, respectively.
The Mountain Hawks will compete in the Winthrop Invite on Friday and the Lafayette 7 Way on Saturday.
