Two more school records fall on day two of PL Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Two more school records fell Friday as Lehigh wrapped up the second day of competition at the Patriot League Championships at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium. Freshman Carolyn Koch set a school record in the 200 yard freestyle to pace the women, who sit in fifth place, while the men's 200 medley relay also set a school mark as the men are fourth with one day remaining in the championship.
After setting a school record in the 50 free on Thursday, Koch broke the 200 record in Friday's preliminary session, then broke it again with a finals time of 1:50.28. The third place finish was is the best for a Lehigh female so far in the championships. In the same event, freshman Courtney Patterson finished in tenth place with a time of 1:52.90.
Senior Emily DiDonato was the only other Mountain Hawk to reach a championship final on Friday as she finished fifth in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.47. Freshman Rebekah Campo won the B Final in that event, clocking in at 1:06.46.
Another freshman, Melissa Feeney won the B final in the 400 IM with a time of 4:29.44.
In the 100 fly Lehigh had two swimmers in the B final with sophomore Mary Samuels placing 11th with a time of 57.69 seconds, while senior Brooke Smalley finished 13th in 58.34. Sophomore Alissa Leung placed 13th in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 58.05 seconds.
Both of Lehigh's relay teams finished fifth on Friday. In the 200 medley relay, Leung, DiDonato, Samuels and Koch teamed to post a time of 1:48.13 while in the 800 free relay, Patterson and Koch teamed with senior Katie Haycraft and sophomore Madeleine Smith to clock in at 7:40.49.
Navy continues to lead the team standings with 534 points, followed by Colgate with 445 and Bucknell with 421. Lehigh (219 points) is 141 points behind fourth place Army and 93 ahead of sixth place Lafayette.
On the men's side, Lehigh's 200 medley relay team consisting of sophomore Martin Kendig, freshman Jacob Hassel, junior Chris Hoke and senior Demetri Karedis opened the evening session by placing third with a school record time of 1:31.52, breaking a mark set back in 2005.
The Mountain Hawks had four swimmers score points in the next event, the 400 yard individual medley. Sophomore Jake Greene qualified for the finals, placing eighth with a time of 4:05.51, while classmate Danny Bennett won the B final in 4:02.15. Right behind Bennett was Hassel who clocked in at 4:03.91, while sophomore Mike Wheaton finished in 15th place.
Lehigh's other individual finalist was Kendig, who finished eighth in the 100 yard backstroke. Carducci finished 12th in the same event with a time of 52.23, while sophomore Sean Brant finished in 15th place after clocking in at 52.75.
The Mountain hawks also had three swimmers in the B final of the 200 yard freestyle. Senior Frank Cuzzola led the way placing 11th in 1:40.81, while junior Matt Chrzanowski placed 15th in 1:42.56 and sophomore Owen Dunbar finished 16th with a time of 1:43.24.
In the final event of the day, Chrzanowski, Dunbar, Bennett and Cuzzola finished fourth in the 800 free relay with a time of 6:48.82.
Navy continues to led the team race, with a 219 point advantage over Army. The Mountain Hawks (275.5 points) trail third place Bucknell by 84 points and lead fifth place American by 94.5 points.
The Patriot League Championships will wrap-up Saturday from Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium. Preliminaries are set for 10:30 a.m. with finals set for 6 p.m.
