BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh swimming and diving teams will host Drexel in their final dual meet of the season, Saturday at Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks will be looking to end their seasons on a positive note after both the men's and women's teams came up short against Patriot League foe Bucknell last weekend.
The Mountain Hawks were originally scheduled to send a contingent of swimmers to the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa., but instead the full squad will compete at home against Drexel.
On the men's side, a win would secure Lehigh a winning record after last weekend's loss dropped the Mountain Hawks to 3-3 on the dual season. The Mountain Hawks will rely on leadership from sprinters Demetri Karedis and Chris Hoke, along with sophomore Danny Bennett, who won the 1000 meters last weekend. Bennett and Karedis accounted for Lehigh's two swimming victories against the Bison,
while sophomore Dan Bateman won the three meter diving event.
The Lehigh women bring a 1-4 dual record to Saturday's meet. The Mountain Hawks lone win this season was a 169-125 win over Lafayette, their fifth straight win over the Leopards. The women will be looking for another standout performance from freshman Courtney Patterson who set a school record in the 1000 yard freestyle and won two individual events in last weekend's meet at Bucknell. Freshman Carolyn Koch posted Lehigh's other win, in the 50 free.
Saturday's meet will also serve as the final home meet for Lehigh's nine-member senior class, which includes Karedis, Frank Cuzzola, Will Dearden, David Pennenga, Katie Brinkhoff, Danielle Caruso, Emily DiDonato, Katie Haycraft and Brooke Smalley.
The Drexel men's team boasts a 6-2 record on the season, while the Dragon women have a 1-8 record in dual competition. In their most recent meet against Howard, both the men and women's teams celebrated monster wins scoring more than double the points of their opponents.
Following this weekend's meet, the Mountain Hawks will spend the next three weeks preparing for the Patriot League Championships at Bucknell, February 21-23.
Saturday's Lehigh-Drexel meet begins at 1 p.m. from Jacobs Pool.
