Lehigh travels to face Drexel Friday, hoping to rebound from OT loss

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On the heels of a heartbreaking loss at Saint Peter's, the Lehigh men's soccer team is looking to bounce back when it travels to Philadelphia to take on the Drexel Dragons on Friday night. The Mountain Hawks scored two first half goals but the Peacocks rallied and forced the game into an extra session where Saint Peter's was able to end the game on a score in the 98th minute. Now that Lehigh's scoreless streak has been broken, the Mountain Hawks hope to get in the win column on Friday night.
Lehigh trails in the all-time series against the Dragons with a 14-17-1 record, with its last meeting ending in a 3-2 overtime loss to the eventual 2007 Colonial Athletic Association champions. The last time Lehigh defeated Drexel was in 2004 when the future Patriot League runner-up Mountain Hawks beat the Dragons 2-0 in Philadelphia.
On Tuesday night, Brian Suchoski put the Mountain Hawks up 2-0 after scoring two first half goals. Lehigh's offense dwindled from that point on and the Peacocks took advantage, scoring two second half goals to force the game into overtime. In the extra period, Saint Peter's freshman Jacob Robertson scored his second goal of the game in the 98th minute to give the Peacocks a 3-2 victory.
Suchoski scored just 2:14 into the game to end the Mountain Hawks' scoring drought and put Lehigh on the board for the first time in 2012. The Lehigh offense has improved each game thus far and will look to continue that acceleration on Friday night in Philadelphia.
Drexel will enter Friday's match 1-1-1 after a 2-1 double overtime victory over Air Force on Sunday. Sophomore midfielder Matheus Goncalves gave the Dragons their first win with his goal in the second extra session, his second of the game and first two of his collegiate career.
Goncalves leads the Drexel attack with two goals on the young season, while sophomore forward Fabio Machado has aided in the offensive attack, adding a goal and an assist thus far. The Dragons were predicted to finish 10th in the CAA this season, receiving 24 points from the league.
The Dragons will host the Mountain Hawks at 7 p.m. at the Vidas Athletics Complex. After tomorrow night's game, Lehigh will return home to host La Salle on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
