BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A day after earning First Team All-Patriot League honors, Lehigh senior Roman Lao-Gosney and sophomore Ty Souders have been named Academic All-League. They mark two of only six Patriot League student-athletes earning both First Team and Academic honors. Lao-Gosney is fifth on the team with 20 points (16 goals, four assists) while Souders owns 28 groundballs and 12 caused turnovers, spearheading one of the nation's top defenses.
Lao-Gosney and Souders join Brendan Buckley (Army), Mike Huffner (Bucknell), Peter Baum (Colgate) and Robert Grabher (Colgate) as the only six players earning both impressive distinctions. Buckley was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Lao-Gosney earned a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the second time in as many years. He owns a strong 3.31 GPA as a Philosophy major. Last spring, he was named to the Dean's List after posting a stellar 3.57 GPA (while in-season). Lao-Gosney has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll on multiple occasions while earning the Lehigh Faculty Athletics Council Award numerous times as well.
On the field, Lao-Gosney has excelled as a staple in the midfield. He's helped lead the Mountain Hawks to their best-ever regular season, entering this weekend's Patriot League Tournament with a 12-2 record. Lao-Gosney was recognized by Quint Kessenich in an April 20 Inside Lacrosse article as one of the nation's dozen difference makers. Roman has a career-high 16 goals, along with four assists this season, including a monster Senior Night game vs. #18 Bucknell when he posted two goals and an assist as part of a thrilling 9-8 win.
Meanwhile, Souders owns an impressive 3.37 GPA as a Business major. Like Lao-Gosney, he has also earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll while garnering the Lehigh Faculty Athletics Council Award for posting a semester GPA over 3.20.
Souders has been a staple for a defensive unit ranked second in fewest goals allowed (6.07 per game). The Patriot League's Defensive Player of the Week on March 5, Souders was also named a Midseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse. Coming off a career-high five-groundball performance at Lafayette, Souders and the defense has allowed six or fewer goals nine times this season.
The #2 seed Mountain Hawks now look ahead to a Patriot League Semifinal tilt vs. third-seeded and #19 nationally-ranked Army on Friday at 8 p.m. Should they win, they'd advance to the Championship Game which is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. The entire tournament will be hosted by Colgate, with all three games aired live on CBS Sports Network.
