NEWARK, Del. - Despite holding a 23-21 shot advantage, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team struggled to finish in dropping an 11-7 final at Delaware Saturday afternoon. Junior Julie McBrien led the offense with four points via three goals and an assist while sophomore Alexandra Fitzpatrick made seven saves between the pipes. The Mountain Hawks will return home next week to face Temple on Wednesday and Robert Morris Saturday.
“We are disappointed to lose this game,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. “We learned what we need to continue to work on, including finishing our opportunities.”
After freshman Carli Sukonik gave the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead at 24:03 of the first, Delaware responded with three straight goals to make it 3-1 following a Caitlin McCartney tally at 19:09.
Senior Leigh Ann Torcivia ended the scoreless drought with a goal, from freshman Scarlett Nawrocki, before McBrien scored her first of the day to tie the score at 3-3 at the 9:55 mark.
However, the Blue Hens responded with two straight goals to take a two-goal advantage into halftime.
Senior Kelly Draper pulled Lehigh within 5-4 just 56 seconds into the second, but Delaware went on to score four straight over the next 20 minutes. It proved too much as the Mountain Hawks responded with three of the final five goals over the final 8:02 to pull within four at the final horn.
The Mountain Hawks held a 23-21 edge in shots while Delaware had an 18-15 advantage in groundballs. Lehigh finished 13 draw controls to the Blue Hens' six, led by three from Torcivia. Fitzpatrick had seven saves across Delaware goalkeeper Alex Zaugra, who made 10.
Lehigh will return home next Wednesday and Saturday to host in-state foes Temple and Robert Morris, respectively.
