Mountain Hawks drop tough 14-5 final to Temple

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team fell into a quick hole and couldn't recover, dropping a 14-5 final to Temple on a chilly Thursday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks (1-2) went down 10-1 late in the first half, but regrouped to play the Owls (4-0) even the rest of the way as the Lehigh defense held Temple scoreless over the game's final 21:19. Senior Kelly Draper led the Mountain Hawks with three goals.
Lehigh sophomore goalkeeper Alexandra Fitzpatrick was injured four minutes into the game and didn't return, forcing freshman Allison Fayans into 44:23 of action off the bench while senior MaryLeah DiNisco played 11:37.
“To have your starting goalkeeper injured so early in the game was tough,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. “We really had a really rough patch. But we rallied from it the best we could and tried to stick together. We lost as a team.”
Temple improved to 4-0 on the season, which includes big wins against Oregon, Rutgers and Mount St. Mary's
Other Lehigh goals came from senior Leigh Ann Torcivia and junior Alissa Hardiman while juniors Megan Kelly and Julie McBrien along with freshmen Carli Sukonik, Scarlett Nawrocki and Kelsey Yenco also dished assists.
Temple scored early and often, taking a 6-0 lead with 20:42 remaining after scoring all six goals in a five-minute span. After more than five minutes without a goal, the Mountain Hawks got on the board when Torcivia finished a nice feed from Nawrocki at 14:53. However, the Owls responded with four straight to open a 10-1 advantage.
Lehigh used two Draper goals, at 6:53 and 5:10, to make it a 10-3 game, but Temple scored four in a row bridging the end of the first and beginning of the second. That made it 14-3 with 21:19 left in the second.
The Mountain Hawks wouldn't quit, pulling together to hold the Owls scoreless over the game's final 21:19 while scoring two goals themselves - from Hardiman and Draper - to make it 14-5 at the final horn.
“People got in and did a nice job for us in different roles,” said Redfern. “We had our opportunities in the second half. We fought really hard and stuck together. It was just too much to overcome.”
Temple held a 23-15 edge on shots and 13-7 on draw controls while the Mountain Hawks had a 15-11 advantage on groundballs. The Owls were only 12-of-21 on clears to Lehigh's 11-of-12. Temple goalie Tess Bishop finished with five saves before being relieved by a pair of keepers, who combined for one. Fayans finished with four stops for the Mountain Hawks in her first collegiate action.
Lehigh looks to bounce back on Saturday when the squad hosts Robert Morris at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
