BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Three former Lehigh University men's soccer players were honored as a part of the MAC 100 Men's Soccer Century Teams. All three were chosen from the 1912-1970 century team after the MAC (Middle Atlantic Conference) celebrated its 100th anniversary by naming a century team in each sport from each era of MAC history.
Michael Broniecki, Daum Carter and Bruce Gitlin were the three players honored for the Brown and White. Each is part of the 13-man team that was chosen by an online voting process where MAC fans submitted their selections. The three former Lehigh standouts are joined on the team by players from Elizabethtown, Haverford, Rider and Swarthmore.
Each of the three players attended and graduated from Lehigh in the 1960s. Broniecki, the captain of the 1960 Brown and White Squad, was named a first team MAC Northern Division All-Star the same year as a striker. Daum, also a striker, is a former MAC Northern Division All-Star as well. He was selected to the first team in 1962. Gitlin was also a first team MAC Northern Division All-Star as a center midfielder in 1962 and captained the Brown and White the same year.
From 1912-1970, Broniecki, Daum, Gitlin and Lehigh played in the first ever era of the MAC conference. Conference play was split between "university" and "college" teams until 1973, when ten schools broke off to form the East Coast Conference and the MAC was split into four sub-conferences (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast). Today, the MAC operates under the Freedom, Commonwealth and Middle Atlantic conferences.
