BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a second half goal spoiled a solid Mountain Hawk effort against rival Lafayette on Saturday night, the Lehigh men's soccer team will travel to Washington, D.C. to take on the No. 3 Hoyas of Georgetown in a non-league match tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. The Mountain Hawks are 0-1 against the Hoyas all-time, with the lone match-up coming in 1997 as Georgetown knocked-off Lehigh 6-1 in Washington.
The Mountain Hawks played solid defense all night and, on the counter attack, consistently pressured the Leopards, keeping the ball on the Lafayette half of the field for the majority of the game. The decisive moment in the 109th meeting between the two teams was a free kick by the Leopards in the 66th minute that found the back of the Lehigh net to give Lafayette the 1-0 victory. Junior goalkeeper Ciaran Nugent stopped four shots on the night, as the defense was able to clear most of the Lafayette attempts out of the zone, keeping the Leopards' scoring opportunities to a minimum.
Lafayette freshman Nate Arronson blasted a free kick from the top right side of the Lehigh box past a sprawling Nugent for the games only score. James Meyerkord recorded the most scoring opportunities for the Lehigh attack, as the junior was able to rip four shots at the Lafayette net, two of which were on-goal, testing the Leopards' junior goalkeeper, but Nathan McDonald was up for the task, making the save each time.
The Mountain Hawks are led by sophomore Brian Suchoski who has scored twice on the season for a team-high four points. Senior Matt Weaver has also found the back of the net, a game-winner in the 89th minute against Penn State earlier in the year. Juniors James Meyerkord and Ben Wysocki, along with freshman Dilan Casanovas Mack have each recorded an assist on the three Lehigh scores. Junior goalkeeper Ciaran Nugent leads a strong Mountain Hawk defense that has limited opposing offenses to, at most, one goal six times this season, as the net minder has registered 37 saves on the season, posting a 1.87 goals against average and a .712 save percentage.
Lehigh will now set its sights on the third-ranked Hoyas, as Georgetown will enter Tuesday's contest at 10-2-1 overall, but riding a two-game losing streak after suffering losses to No. 2 Connecticut and No. 10 Notre Dame this past week. The Hoyas were ranked No. 3 in the nation in Division I men's soccer as of October 2, but have scored just one goal in their last 180 minutes of action after a 2-1 loss to UConn before a 3-0 shutout defeat at the hands of the Fighting Irish.
Hoya freshman forward Brandon Allen has scored a team-best eight times this season to lead the Georgetown offense with 18 points, as he has also added two assists to his offensive effort. Senior Andy Riemer has scored six times this year for a second-best 12 points, while junior Steve Neumann has collected 11 points via two goals and seven assists throughout the season. The three leading points scorers for Georgetown have started all 13 games for the Hoyas, as Allen is tied for 27th in the nation by averaging 1.64 points per game.
On defense, Georgetown has split the tim
e in the net for both goalkeepers that have seen action this season. Thomas Gomez has logged the most time with 663 minutes on the year over seven starts, as the sophomore is undefeated on the pitch, posting a 6-0-1 record, while making 23 saves for a .793 save percentage. Junior Keon Parsa has made six starts for the Hoyas, making 31 saves while posting a .893 save percentage on the year. Parsa has a 4-2-0 record in the net for Georgetown, as he has played in every conference game thus far this season.
After the non-league tilt with Georgetown, Lehigh will hit the road for Annapolis, Md. for a Patriot League duel with the Midshipmen of Navy on Saturday, October 13 at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will be in search of their first Patriot League win of 2012 and the start of a late-season playoff push.
