BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh sophomore Rylan Collins has been named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending on October 14, following his three-point performance in Lehigh's 2-1 win over Navy on Saturday. Collins scored the first goal of the game in the 12th minute and added an assist on classmate Ali Famili's game-winner in the 72nd minute, as the Mountain Hawks earned their first Patriot League victory of 2012 and put themselves back into the hunt for the Patriot League Tournament.
One minute after the Mountain Hawk attack blasted a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar, freshman Kyle Chin lofted a ball into the Navy box where Collins volleyed a shot into the near post corner to beat the Navy net minder and give Lehigh a 1-0 lead. Then in the 72nd minute, the Mids turned the ball over on their own half of the field. Collins corralled the ball and found fellow sophomore Famili inside the left post. Famili deposited the ball into the back of the Navy net for the eventual game-winner, handing the Mids their first Patriot League loss of the season.
The points were the first of Collins' career as the Bloomfield, CT. native joined the team as a walk-on this season. Collins is now second on the team in points, trailing only sophomore Brian Suchoski, who has registered a pair of goals on the year. The Offensive Player of the Week honor is the first weekly honor a Lehigh player has earned since Suchoski was named Rookie of the Week on Oct. 4, 2011 and the first Offensive Player of the Week winner since junior Ben Wysocki on Nov. 1, 2010.
The win moves Lehigh's Patriot League record to 1-3-0 and gives the Mountain Hawks a chance to qualify for league playoffs as three league games remain on their slate. Collins and the rest of the Mountain Hawks will return to action tomorrow when they visit Yale in a non-league match scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. Following tomorrow's tilt, Lehigh will host Holy Cross on Saturday in a 4 p.m. contest at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
