BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a tough 2-0 loss to No. 10 Georgetown on Tuesday, the Lehigh men's soccer team will travel to Annapolis, Md. on Saturday night to take on the Navy Midshipmen in search of its first Patriot League win. Saturday's game will be the middle match of a three-game road trip for the Mountain Hawks that will conclude next Tuesday with a match in New Haven, Conn. against the Bulldogs of Yale.
Navy holds a 30-16-6 all-time advantage in the series, but 10 of the last 12 matches have gone to Lehigh as the Mids have won just one time against the Mountain Hawks since 2000. Three of the last 12 matches have gone into double overtime, with Lehigh going 2-0-1 in those extended games.
On Tuesday, the Mountain Hawks traveled to Washington, D.C. to take on the No. 10 Georgetown Hoyas in a midweek non-league match. Georgetown scored once in each half for a 2-0 win, but Lehigh played solid defense throughout the game, turning away the Georgetown attack and limiting the Hoyas' scoring opportunities to just six shots-on-goal over the 90 minutes. Junior goalkeeper Ciaran Nugent made four saves throughout the game as he has now totaled 41 on the season, which ranks him fourth in the Patriot League.
Brian Suchoski leads the Mountain Hawk attack with four points via two goals on the season. Senior Matt Weaver has also found the back of the net, scoring a dramatic game-winning goal against Penn State earlier in the year. Juniors Ben Wysocki and James Meyerkord, along with freshman Dilan Casanovas Mack have each assisted on a Lehigh score. On defense, Nugent has posted a .707 save percentage and a 1.88 goals against average as the starting net minder for the Mountain Hawks, playing in 10 games and totaling 812 minutes in goal.
Navy will enter Saturday night's contest with a 5-2-3 overall record as the Mids are 1-0-2 in Patriot League play this season. In their last match, the Midshipmen played to a 1-1 draw against the Bison of Bucknell for their second Patriot League tie. After falling behind 1-0 to the Bison in the 18th minute, Navy freshman Thomas Shiiba scored in the 38th minute to tie the game at one goal apiece. Neither team was able to find the back of the net over the remaining 67 minutes, resulting in Navy's second Patriot League draw of the season. In the previous match, Navy tied Army 1-1 after two overtimes in a game played at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. The Mids have not lost a game since a 2-0 defeat on their home turf at the hands of the High Point Panthers on September 8. Since then, Navy has gone 4-0-2, allowing one or less goals in five of those six matches.
Sophomore Joseph Greenspan and junior Alex Wilson lead the Navy attack that averages a league-best 1.90 goals per game, each with three goals and four assists for 10 points. Along with Greenspan and Wilson, 10 other Midshipmen have found the back of the net this season as Navy has totaled 52 points, good for third in the Patriot League. On defense, junior Gavin Snyder has started 10 games, making 31 saves and posting a .705 save percentage to lead the Navy net protection.
After Saturday night's showdown with Navy, the Mountain Hawks will travel to New Haven, Conn. on Tuesday, October 16 for their non-league finale against the Bulldogs of Yale as game time is slated for 7 p.m. inside Reese Stadium.
