BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a strong showing against Marist last week to open 2012, the Lehigh swimming and diving teams take to the road Friday, heading to the Hudson Valley region of New York to swim against Patriot League rival Army. The Mountain Hawk men will put their undefeated record on the line against a tough Black Knight squad, while Lehigh's women will look for their third straight win over Army.
In its first meet of the New Year last weekend, Lehigh's men dominated Marist 202-98 at Jacobs Pool, while the women put forth some impressive performances, despite falling 171-129 to the defending MAAC Champion Red Foxes.
In one of its best showings in years against a tough Marist squad, freshman Alissa Leung led the way winning both the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events. On Monday Leung was named Patriot League Female Swimmer of the Week for her performance against the Red Foxes. Freshman Mary Samuels and junior Brooke Smalley added event wins for the Mountain Hawks, with Samuels winning the 200 yard butterfly and Smalley capturing the 100 fly. The Mountain Hawks are 3-3 in dual meets, and 2-1 against league opponents. Lehigh
defeated Holy Cross and Lafayette and suffered its lone league setback to Colgate.
Army will be competing in its first dual meet since being swept by rival Navy on December 8. The Black Knight men enter the meet at 5-2 overall while the women come in at 2-6. Army recently returned to campus following its annual winter training trip in Puerto Rico. It will be a busy weekend on tap for the Black Knights, who will host Lehigh Friday night before hosting Bucknell on Saturday. The Bison will actually visit Bethlehem on Saturday January 21 in Lehigh's home finale.
Lehigh and Army have split dual meets each of the last two years with the Mountain Hawks winning both years on the women's side and the Black Knight men handing Lehigh's men their first loss of the season on both occasions. The Mountain Hawk men will be looking for their first-ever dual meet win over Army, which holds a 40-0 series edge. The women's series favors the Black Knights by a 12-5 margin.
Friday's meet gets underway at 6 p.m. from Crandall Pool in West Point, N.Y.
