BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior back Jordie Ciuffetelli was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday. The Unionville, Pa. native assisted on the game-winning double-overtime goal in the 106th minute that lifted Lehigh to a 1-0 victory at Bucknell Saturday and he had two defensive saves when he cleared the ball off the goal line, one in the first half and the second in double overtime.
Lehigh was on the verge of its second straight draw last week. Then on Ciuffetelli's second straight throw in halfway through the second overtime, the ball found its way back to him as he served it into the far post for senior Kevin Strunk whose header found the back of the net for the game-winning goal against the Patriot League defending champion Bison. It was Ciuffetelli's first assist on the season.
For his efforts, Ciuffetelli was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Ciuffetelli is part of a Mountain Hawks defense that is ranked No. 2 in the nation in goals against average (0.22 GAA). Lehigh has given up just two goals in 806 minutes of action which included a pair of shutouts in 216 minutes this past week as both matches went into double overtime. The Mountain Hawks now have put together four consecutive shutouts and have six in eight games this season.
Ciuffetelli and the rest of the Mountain Hawks will look to keep momentum going on both sides of the ball when it hosts Colgate Saturday, October 1st at 4 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks will look to avenge a 1-0 loss at Colgate last season.
