BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore keeper Ciaran Nugent was named the Patriot League BRINE Goalkeeper of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. Nugent posted a six-save shutout in Lehigh's home opener against Stony Brook which resulted in a 0-0 tie on Saturday. It is Nugent's second-career shutout in as many career starts.
Nugent has now played 200 collegiate minutes and has yet to give up a goal. On Saturday against defending America East Semifinalist Stony Brook, Nugent went to work right away when six minutes into the game, Sverre Ofstad got loose on a breakaway but Nugent came out of goal to make a sliding save.
Then in the second half, Nugent made another nice save on a tough shot in the 62nd minute. In the first overtime, Stony Brook nearly won the match with a series of shots, but Nugent came up big again. With 1:30 left in the period, Berian Gobeil Cruz had a close-range shot that Nugent stopped. Will Casey was there for the rebound, but his shot hit the post and bounced back to him. He took a second shot, but Nugent was there for the clutch save to thwart the attack and preserve the 0-0 double-overtime tie.
In Nugent's only other career start, he recorded a five-save shutout against NJIT last season.
The Canton, Mass. native will be back in the net on Wednesday when Lehigh travels to take on Fordham at 7 p.m.
