BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After the Lehigh men's soccer team put together a great weekend on the west coast, playing to a draw against then-No. 22 California and beating Stanford, team and individual honors have been pouring in. The most recent recipient is sophomore keeper Ciaran Nugent who was named the College Soccer 360 National Primetime Player of the Week for Division I men's soccer and the ECAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Nugent stopped 12 of 13 shots against the pair of Pac-12 powers. He made a career-high eight saves against Cal before stopping all four sent his way against Stanford two days after Stanford had upset then-No. 15 Kentucky 3-0.
On the season, Nugent's .929 save percentage ranks him sixth in the nation while his 0.36 GAA ranks him 11th. He has three shutouts in five games this season while in six career games, Nugent has only allowed two goals.
Nugent faced 21 corner kicks between the two games as he dealt with constant pressure in the box. In the Stanford game, the Cardinal had three-consecutive corner kicks. The first led to a shot saved by Nugent and the next two chances were headers – one that was blocked and one that went wide.
And late in the game against Cal, Nugent came up with two big saves to keep the draw intact. In the final 10 minutes of regulation, there was a flurry of action as two Cal forwards put shots on goal in the 85th minute and the 90th minute, but Nugent was there both times to thwart the attack.
Nugent was one of three Division I men's players named to the College Soccer 360 Primetime Performers of the Week along with Dartmouth's Alex Adelabu and Virginia Tech's Kyle Renfro.
On Monday, it was announced that Nugent was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this season and he was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
As a team, Lehigh is now ranked No. 3 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings, a jump up seven spots after being ranked No. 10 a week ago.
Nugent and the rest of the Mountain Hawks return to action Saturday when they host St. Peter's at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
