“We are very pleased with the selection,” said Koski. “I think both will bring a different dynamic as leaders; Neal is little more experienced and a little more vocal while Cam leads more by example. Both of them are highly respected by their teammates and by the coaching staff. That's what you want in leaders.”
Melchionni has been a workhorse since setting foot on campus, playing (and starting) in 51 of 53 career games. His point total has increased each year, starting with four as a freshman (one goal, two assists), then five as a sophomore (one goal, three assists) and eight as a junior (three goals, two assists). His career game came last year against Holy Cross when he scored both Lehigh goals in a key Patriot League victory. That earned him a spot on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week along with Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Omsberg enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign, starting all 18 games. His first-career point came against Princeton when he assisted on the game-winning goal in Lehigh's 500th win in program history. He also impressed defensively, helping a Mountain Hawks' squad allow only 18 goals in 18 games, including eight shutouts.
“The team went through a pretty thorough self-analysis with the help of [Athletics Leadership Coordinator] Julie Sterrett,” said Koski. “Through her guidance and mentorship in a number of meetings, they were able to identify the qualities that are the most important to them as a team - first and foremost - in their leader. They openly discussed who they thought would best serve the needs of this team and both Neal and Cam became the obvious choices. We were certainly very pleased with the process.”
