BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team will open Patriot League play in Hamilton, N.Y. on Friday against Colgate at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks knocked off the Raiders in overtime at the Ulrich Sports Complex last year and have won four of the last five meetings overall. Colgate is the only remaining unbeaten team in the league, boasting a 3-0-3 record in 2010.
Lehigh (3-3-1) is led offensively by junior Joe Puleo, who has scored four of the team's eight goals this season. Puleo's four tallies are tied for the most among Patriot League players. Senior keeper Jonathan Nydell also lays claim to league-best honors in the shutout category as his three clean-sheets are tied for the top league mark. The Mountain Hawks will be looking for their first true road win of the season after earning two victories at home (Rutgers, Princeton) and one at a neutral site (Furman).
Colgate's recipe for success has been its airtight defense, which has conceded only three goals in six matches. Goalkeeper Chris Miller has allowed two goals in four starts and owns the top goals against average (0.43) and save percentage (.889) in the Patriot League. Offensively, Mike Reidy paces the Raiders with two goals, while Jeff Leach leads the way with a league-high 21 shots. Colgate was predicted to finish in a tie for fourth in the Patriot League preseason poll after placing sixth in the standings a year ago. The Raiders have defeated Albany, Siena and Stony Brook so far this year, while playing to draws against Binghamton, Temple and Vermont.
Friday's matchup will be the 25th all-time meeting between the Mountain Hawks and Raiders; Colgate leads overall by an 11-9-4 margin. Lehigh last defeated Colgate on the road in 2006, winning by a 1-0 margin.
