BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After being off from competition last weekend, Lehigh's swimming and diving teams will travel to University Park on Saturday to face non-league foe Penn State. It will mark the Mountain Hawk's final regular season dual meet before the upcoming Patriot League Championships in two weeks in Lewisburg, Pa.
Lehigh is looking to bounce back from two disappointing losses to Bucknell on January 22. The Mountain Hawks suffered a 189-126 loss on the women's side, while the men's team was defeated 170-122, marking the first dual meet this season that the squad was swept.
Lehigh's women head into Saturday with a record of 4-4 on the season while the men maintain an 8-2 record.
Despite the loss, the women's team put forth strong individual efforts during the Bucknell meet. Freshman Meredith Bayer won all three individual events for the Mountain Hawks and sophomore Emily DiDonato placed second in the 100 yard breaststroke. Brooke Smalley, Stephanie Yaszemski, Alena Pollitt and Paola Simon also came in second place in the 200 yard medley relay.
The men's side will try and get back on the winning track after losing two straight meets to Army and Bucknell.
The Mountain Hawks put up a strong fight against the Bison, registering eight second place finishes and winning two events. Junior
Chris Toth topped the 1650 yard freestyle, while sophomore Tyler Lareau placed first in the 100 yard backstroke. Junior Kevin Shoemaker also had a noteworthy performance with three runner-up finishes.
Penn State women's team enter Saturday's meet with a record of 7-2 while the men own a 4-6 record. Last weekend the Nittany Lion men defeated Northwestern, but fell to Michigan and Ohio State in a quad meet. The men will host Buffalo on Friday before Lehigh comes to town. Penn State's women edged Michigan 123-120 last time out, and the Lady Lions are ranked 25th nationally.
Last year's dual meet against the Nittany Lions was cancelled due to a snowstorm. Saturday's meet will be held in McCoy Natatorium at 12 p.m.
