Mountain Hawks drop heartbreaker to Delaware in overtime

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After earning a season-opening win over Marist last week, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team fought back from a 6-0 deficit and fell just short in an overtime loss to Delaware, 10-9, on Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex on the Goodman Campus.
Lehigh trailed 6-0 in the first half, but the Mountain Hawks would rally and eventually tied the game up. In the first overtime, both teams went scoreless. In the second overtime with the game still tied, Delaware's Morgan Leonard scored with 11 seconds remaining to secure the nail biting win for the Blue Hens.
“It is really tough to come out of the hole we did today,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. “We fought hard and the effort was definitely there. You have to credit Delaware with how they played. They came in here and fought hard just like us.”
Senior Lauren Dykstra scored three goals and had a total of four points for the Mountain Hawks. Senior Allison Thomas added four points, which included three assists. Freshman Alex Fitzpatrick made 12 saves in goal for Lehigh.
Delaware came out firing on all cylinders early in the game. Leonard scored the opening goal for the Blue Hens, just 39 seconds into the game. Holly Burman scored the next two goals, as Delaware had a 3-0 lead with 25:23 remaining in the first half. The Hens would then score three more goals in the next nine minutes to gain a 6-0 lead with 16:43 remaining in the first stanza.
Sophomore Megan Kelly got things going for the Mountain Hawks as she scored off an assist from senior Allison Thomas at the 13:13 mark. Thomas would score nearly 35 seconds later to cut Delaware's lead to four. The Blue Hens would net one more goal, followed by a Lehigh goal from senior Lauren Dykstra to make the score 7-3 as both teams headed into halftime.
Dykstra scored a little over two minutes in the second half to make the score 7-4. The Mountain Hawks were not done, as freshman Chelsea Retaleato scored on a free position shot to make it 7-5. After Delaware countered with a score, Lehigh would snag the next three goals, the first coming from Dykstra and the other two from Kelly Draper and Anna Patterson.
With the game now tied at eight, Delaware's Chelsea Fay scored an unassisted goal to put the Blue Hens up 9-8 with 8:33 remaining. Draper came through in the clutch for Lehigh though, as she scored with 2:56 remaining in regulation to tie the game at nine and forcing the overtime period, in which Delaware would score the eventual game-winning goal.
Delaware held the final shot edge, 30-22, while Lehigh led in ground balls as well, 14-13. The Mountain Hawks were an impressive 5-of-10 on free position shots, while the Blue Hens failed to convert on seven attempts.
The Mountain Hawks return to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Wednesday at 3:30 as they take on Saint Josephs.
