BETHLEHEM, Pa. – EIWA rivals Lehigh and Penn will wrap-up the dual season Sunday on Senior Day inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The tenth-ranked Mountain Hawks are coming off an impressive 21-9 win over No. 7 Rutgers Thursday night in New Jersey. Lehigh won seven bouts against the Scarlet Knights, keyed by upset wins from Stephen Dutton, Joey Napoli and Brandon Hatchett against higher-ranked opposition.
Sunday's match marks the final home dual for senior 125-pounder Mitch Berger. The Freehold, N.J. native joined Lehigh as a walk-on prior to the 2007-08 season and was immediately thrust into the starting lineup. Berger has showed tremendous improvement in four years in Lehigh's wrestling room. He was a spot-starter for the last two seasons before winning the starting job for his senior season. Berger's eight wins are a career-high and two of the have come against ranked opponents.
Penn enters its dual meet finale with a 10-5 record and a 5-1 mark against EIWA opponents. The Quakers split two duals last weekend, losing a 28-9 decision against Cornell before bouncing back with a win over Columbia on Sunday. Penn has seven wrestlers ranked in the top 33 in the latest Coaches Panel Rankings, led by sophomore Micah Burak who is ranked fourth at 197 and senior Rollie Peterkin who comes in at No. 5 at 133. Four Quakers are ranked by Amateur Wrestling News with Mark Rappo (125) and Zack Kemmerer (141) joining Burak and Peterkin. Penn also has returning All-America Scott Giffin, who has been slowed by injury this season, at 174.
Lehigh and Penn meet for the 50th time Sunday in a series that dates back to 1912. The Mountain Hawks have won 38 of the 49 meetings including two straight. These two schools have met in each of the last 15 seasons after not having wrestled between 1956 and 1996.
Sunday's match gets underway at 1 p.m. from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets can be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME or by visiting the Lehigh ticket office located in Grace Hall.
