Mountain Hawks kick off indoor season at home Friday
12/1/2011 9:49:00 PM | Women's Track and Field
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams will begin their indoor season with the Season Opener on Friday at Rauch Field House on the Goodman Campus beginning at 3:30 p.m. Lehigh will be one of seven teams competing as the Mountain Hawks begin the journey en route to what they are hoping will end in Patriot League Championships.
"It's all about the process and what is best for the long run," said men's and women's head coach Matt Utesch. "This meet is a little different because we have a couple of different goals. Most importantly, we want to see that the athletes are doing what we have been working on with them in practice since September. When you add in competition, it becomes a little more difficult to duplicate the things you do in practice so we just want see them moving forward and making progress. Some of the new things they are trying and learning may result in some failures, but it's not about results right now."
Lehigh will be hosting Moravian, Millersville, Alvernia, Penn, Loyola (Md) and Johns Hopkins. The complete schedule of events is below.
"We've been in the middle of the pack the past few years, but I think we have the solution this season," Utesch said. "Between our experienced upperclassmen and our dynamite freshmen, I'm really excited to see what this season brings."
The men's team, which finished fourth at last year's Patriot League Indoor Championships, will be captained on the Field Event side by seniors Kyle Forrest and Stephen Tutunjian and on the Distance side by seniors Evan Flach and Evans Kosgei.
Those four will not only look to lead the Mountain Hawks with solid performances, but will be relied upon to push the freshmen to where they need to be because this year's incoming class will have a major impact for Lehigh.
"While the upperclassmen continue to build on their success, the freshmen are going to have score for us this year," Utesch said. "I think we are about five or six people short of bringing home a Championship and that's going to have to come from this freshmen class."
While the Patriot League Championships aren't on the radar just yet, Utesch is trying to make freshmen on both teams understand the importance of thinking long term.
"The biggest challenge for the freshmen is to just remain confident and understand that it's a process," Utesch said. "At this first meet on Friday, I just want to see that they are taking what we are doing in practice and applying it. It's not about results right now, it's about the process."
It's a process that Utesch feels could end in a big result for the Lehigh Track and Field programs.
"This is the year for both sides," Utesch said. "When you are talking about building a program, it's built. The door is open and we need to take advantage."
