Lehigh hosts Army with Patriot League Tournament berth at stake

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team set a goal in the beginning of the season to make the Patriot League Tournament. The team is now one win away from achieving that as the Mountain Hawks host Army Saturday night at 7 p.m. With a win, Lehigh will clinch a spot in the Tournament for the third straight season. Ironically, Lehigh defeated Army last season to clinch its berth to the Tournament.
Lehigh has defeated Army in 14 consecutive matches, going 13-0-1 in that span. The Mountain Hawks haven't lost to the Black Knights since 1996.
As Lehigh looks to keep that streak alive Saturday night, the Mountain Hawks will also celebrate their eight seniors at halftime. To read more about them, click here.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a tough 2-0 loss to Princeton on Tuesday and prior to that a 1-0 loss to American in snowy conditions as the Eagles scored the game-winning goal in the 90th minute.
Previous to those pair of matches, the Lehigh offense was rolling scoring eight goals in three games. The Mountain Hawks will look to get back on the scoreboard early and often against an Army defense that has given up just two goals in its last three games. The Black Knights are 2-0-1 in that span which have included wins over Bucknell and Adelphi and most recently, a 0-0 tie against Lafayette.
Army is led by Josh Koeppe who leads the team in shots (37) and goals (4) while Elliot McGilbra leads the team with three assists.
Army ranks sixth in the league in goals allowed (1.59 per match) while the nationally-ranked Lehigh defense will look to keep the Black Knights off the board.
The Mountain Hawks entered the week ranked No. 3 in goals against average (0.37), No. 3 in saves percentage (0.909) and No. 4 in shutout percentage (.60).
Lehigh can also get into the Patriot League Tournament with a tie, but would then need Lafayette to lose or tie against Bucknell.
Saturday night's match against Army will be a Summit Series contest. Tickets are five dollars for the general public while Lehigh students and staff are admitted free of charge with a valid ID. For more information on Summit Series games, please click here.
The match will also be U.S. Soccer night, which will feature plenty of prizes and giveaways.
