Lehigh looks to rebound at Saint Joseph’s Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After the Lehigh women's basketball team dropped its season opener on Friday, the Mountain Hawks will look to rebound and pick up its first win of the season as they travel to take on WNIT team Saint Joseph's Sunday at 2 p.m. Lehigh won the meeting last season with a 46-40 win at Stabler Arena as the Mountain Hawks will be looking for its first win at Saint Joseph's since 2004.
It will also be Lehigh's second straight game against an Atlantic-10 team as the Mountain Hawks fell 63-43 to La Salle on Friday. Lehigh was led by senior Alexa Williams who had a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds as she exploded in the second half with 12 points. Williams was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line while the Mountain Hawks were 12-for-14 from the charity stripe.
Along with Williams, junior Kelly Peterson added eight points while junior Sarah Pearce and freshman Sarah O'Reilly had seven points each. Lehigh went on a quick 6-0 run early in the second half as it attempted to make a valiant comeback, but fell short as the Mountain Hawks' shots wouldn't drop.
Lehigh lost its season opener last year before winning its second game of the season and it will be looking to repeat the pattern this year as it takes on a tough Saint Joseph's team. The Hawks posted a 20-12 record last season and advanced to the second round of the WNIT, marking the second year in a row that Saint Joseph's earned a postseason berth.
The Hawks return all five starters including four seniors, led by senior guard Michelle Baker who averaged 12.2 ppg and 4.3 rpg last season. This season she was named to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference Second Team and All-Defensive Team. Saint Joseph's was picked to finish fifth in the A-10 in the conference's preseason poll.
Saint Joseph's is also coming off a season-opening loss as the Hawks fell 79-62 at Princeton on Friday. The Hawks were led by sophomore forward Ashley Robinson who had 18 points and 10 rebounds while Baker added 12 points and a pair of rebounds.
Lehigh is 13-41 all-time against the Atlantic-10. The Mountain Hawks went 2-2 last year against the conference and after this weekend, Lehigh still has two more games against A-10 teams as it will take on Rhode Island and Richmond as part of the Christmas City Classic at the end of December at Stabler Arena.
Sunday afternoon's game will be part of a stretch of road games for Lehigh in which it plays six of its first seven games away from Bethlehem.
The game can be heard on WLVR-FM 91.3 and Lehighsports.com with Matt Markus on the call beginning at 1:45 p.m.
