BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the third time this season, sophomore Ciaran Nugent was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday. Nugent allowed one goal in 200 minutes of action, going 1-0-1 during the period including Saturday's 2-0 shutout of Navy.
The Canton, Mass. native had nine saves and a .900 save percentage between the two matches. On Tuesday, Nugent faced 14 shots against a very good Ivy League Penn offense which ranked tops in the Ivy League and was a NCAA Tournament team last season. Then on Saturday against the Midshipmen, Nugent faced 10 shots, saving five of them including four in a second half in which Navy was trying to climb back in the game down two goals.
Nugent had a nifty save late in the second half when a Navy striker hit a ball from 10 yards out and Nugent dove to his right to get a hand on it. The ball deflected off Nugent's hand and hit the post and bounced back behind Nugent but the keeper jumped on it to prevent any damage.
Nugent ranks No. 2 in the nation in goals against average (.298) and save percentage (.925) while the Mountain Hawks rank No. 4 nationally in shutout percentage (0.67).
With the win over Navy, Lehigh now sits in a three-way tie for second place in the Patriot League standings.
Nugent and the rest of the Mountain Hawks will take the pitch on Tuesday night in a non-league match against Albany at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The game will be broadcast LIVE on Lehighsports.com.
