Dykstra named to 2010 Tewaaraton Watch List

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Greater Washington Sports Alliance announced the 2010 Tewaaraton women’s watch list on Friday and Lehigh junior Lauren Dykstra is among those on the list. This high-status award is given annually to the NCAA men’s and women’s lacrosse player of the year. The list is comprised of the top lacrosse players from across the country and across all three divisions of collegiate lacrosse. This year, between the men’s and women’s list, 35 institutions are recognized, in over 13 conferences. The nominees are screened and selected by the Selection Committee comprised of college coaches.
Dykstra has posted impressive numbers in her two seasons as a Mountain Hawk, and is well on her way to another remarkable season, already having scored seven goals in Lehigh’s first two matchups.
As a freshman, Dykstra set a new Lehigh record for number of goals scored by a freshman with 64. This was also the most goals scored by any Mountain Hawk since 1995. Dykstra was also named Patriot League Rookie of the Week five times, which tied the previous record. Dykstra managed to score a goal in every game, totaling three or more in 13. She was named the 2008 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, and was a First-Team All-Patriot League and Patriot League All-Tournament selection.
In her sophomore season, Dykstra ranked among the nation’s leaders with 67 goals and 75 points. Her 67 goals were the third most in a single season in school annals. She led the country with 82 ground balls, and scored six or more goals in three games. Dykstra also led the Mountain Hawks in nine statistical categories. She was named the 2009 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, and named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week four times. In addition, Dykstra was a First-Team All-Mid-Atlantic and First-Team All-Patriot League selection.
“We are exceptionally proud to have one of our players named to this prestigious list and represent our team and the Patriot League on the national level,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. “Lauren is a talented player who exemplifies a team-first attitude.”
The Tewaaraton Award was established in 2000, and tradition dictates that the award celebrates one of the six tribal nations of the Iroquois Confederacy each year. This year marks the 10th annual awards ceremony and will represent the “Year of the Seneca”.
The awards will be presented on June 3, 2010 at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
